    Arrow New to board

    Hello!

This is a long introduction, but there are questions at the end. I would greatly appreciate your input.

Last night when I got yet another birth announcement from a friend, I renewed my search (or "obsession" as my DH sometimes calls it). I found this board! I am so glad to find an active board on MF. Reading your posts was enlightening.

We are in our 4th year TTC and I've been participating in a miscarriage board for 2yrs. Not many folks there with (or aware of?) MF. Perhaps here DH and I are a more common story: 1yr TTC, 2mcs, 1yr TTC ... RE not testing MF because I had been pg. Finally I sent DH for testing with a different RE. Sperm count great, volume and motility fine, but no liquefaction, viscosity 2-3+, and morphology 5%. In retrospect I was pg 2004 following DH's severe illness for which he took cough syrup (a home remedy for viscosity).

I am so glad to read here about improvement with medicines and vitamins. Last year DH took vitamins and his sperm count doubled, but density and morph remained the same. DH has been taking TCM herbs for 2mos now, effective this mo. We are TTC "anew".

When I showed DH this board he was a bit offended as in 2004 our PCP has suggested gauif. but not strongly, in 2005 our 1st RE said MF wasn't an issue and in 2006 our 2nd RE said SA was fine, then looked again at DH's prompting and said "no wonder you're not getting pg" but he recalls her only mentioning the viscosity as a concern - no mention of morphology (perhaps since his sperm count is ~100 now?)

    Questions (lots):

    (1) When "morphology" is mentioned, is that "normal" or "strict" or "Kruger"? How are those related to each other, or to count/motility/volume?

    (2) Anyone else have "unexplained" mc(s)? Did your REs say morphology was related or not? if so, at what %?

    (3) Anyone else using TCM or cough syrup (gauif.) for MF?

    (4) How much a part does liquefaction or viscosity play?

    (5) Where are you in the process?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Wishing the best for all of us,
    ~Sharon

Welcome TTCyears! The people that participate in Fertile Thoughts have a wealth of information and are a great support. I am sorry I can't answer any of your questions. My dh was diagnosed with low testosterone, which affects every part of the sperm. He was on a nutritional supplement (Proxeed), Clomid (12 1/2 mg), and Armidix for about a year and saw some improvement, but not a lot. We tried 3 IUI's while he was on meds. We are now about to start our first IVF.

I wish you luck. Sorry I wasn't able to answer any of your questions.

    Welcome!

My DH's first two SAs showed agglutination (clumping) and poor viscosity. This prompted our urologist to test for anti-sperm antibodies - that turned out to be our problem. I'm sure there are other problems that can cause this but this was our experience. ASAB cause lowered motility and morphology too.

We are doing IUI and they collect DH's specimen in HTF, human tubal fluid - this attempts to stop the clumping and improve viscosity. We just finished our second IUI with injectibles.

My DH doubled his counts with 3 months of vitamins (multi, E, C, low-dose aspirin) - we went from 78 to 140 million (of course, his body just produced more ASAB ). I would swear by the vitamins for count.

Has your DH seen a urologist?

    Good luck!

78 million to 140 million? That's absolutely incredible! lol!
My dh started with just 2 million and at his best produced >9 million! He was on a multi-vitamin with the other meds mentioned previously. Good luck to you.

    Thank you both.

RR and BL, for your IUIs what medicines did you use? Was just male factor a concern, or both female and male? I am wary of "messing" around with my hormones when right now that's all we got going for us.

RR, ours just doubled their count, your DH more than quadrupled his, wow!! Sending you tons of baby and sticky glue for a successful IVF!

BL, my DH was supposed to get ASA testing but there was confusion from referral to specialist to lab. With your reminder my DH is on board to ensure that ASA testing is done when he gets his next SA (in a few wks when his 3-mo meds are done).

    Again, thank you both.

Wishing us our dreams come true...
    ~Sharon
