    Undescended testicles in childhood

DH had undescended testicles that were treated in childhood. We have been ttc for 6+ years. I have also been diagnosed with PCOS and am having some success with metformin to become more regular. The urologist wants to do another sc and some blood work on dh. Has anyone ever had any success with any type of hormone treatment later in adulthood after having undescended testicles as a child? What types of treatment are there for this to increase our chances? Thanks in advance for any help!

My DH had them too (pg/lc ment)

My DH had undescended testicles and did not have corrective surgery until he was 11 years old. We knew there would most likely be issues because of this. He had a count done and it was something like 1.5 mil total. Visited the urologist and had exam, bloodwork, and ultrasound done. Hormone levels were normal and ultrasound was normal. Testicles are down, but small. All counts have been very low. Urologist said there was really nothing he could do and referred us to an RE for IVF. Anyway, tried donor and ended up having an early miscarriage. Interestingly got pg right after naturally and he is just turning three. And to top it all off we got pg again on our own and are almost 32 weeks. Also, I am almost 41 and have elevated FSH. What have your DH counts been? Sorry I can't help you with advice on treatment cause my DH had no treatment.

Thanks for your reply. DH's counts have been 2 mil, 4 mil, and 8 mil at different times. The most recent was 2 mil. The others were quite a few years ago. It's encouraging to hear of your pregnancies. I know that we can try many things, but ultimately God is in control! Thank you again for your encouragement.

My DH had similar counts although he did have one that was 8 million post wash which was the highest ever. We did an iui on that one and got pg, but lost it at 8 weeks summer of 03. Best of luck to you and your DH.

My DH had undescending testicles when he was a child. Have you talked to a urologist specialist? That is the first place I would make an appointment and get to the root of the problem so you can go to the next step. A urologist specialist will be able to run test and be able to give you some concrete answers to your questions. Check out www.resolve.org they have a great book and website that goes into male infertitily and what you test should be conducted.

This was a very hard thing to deal with for my husband but I was just completely reassuring and told him that you know what I did not marry you for your sperm factory - only married you because you are my loover so don't worry about it. I learned with my husband joking around made him more comfortable and more at easy with the process.

    I really hope this helps!

My husband also has bad sperm because of undescended testicles. His counts fluctuate but never are over 5 million. We're doing IVF with ICSI and he's seeing a urologist who has put him on Clomid (!). The last test showed his count a little higher and his testosterone higher, so its at least doing something. He was also advised to ice down his groin for 2 hrs a day but he hasn't done that yet. I had 3 embryos transferred last week and will be having a beta test next week, so hopefully ICSI is the answer for us. The good thing about MF is that we went straight to IVF and didn't have to try IUI or other things for months before hand. Also lucky that we live in Massachusetts where IVF is covered by our health ins. Its a huge ego destroyer for men - my husband keeps saying "This is the ONE THING I'm designed to do and I can't do it!" I love him and his sorry little testicles and know that we'll end up with a family one way or another!

    Hi Jacannist

Sounds like you have a great attitude about this stuff. It sure is a big blow to their ego. Before we ttc we had a good idea this would be an issue, but when he had his first sa he felt really bad about the whole thing. You are very fortunate to have insurance cover the IVF/ICSI. We do not have coverage for it, otherwise we would have jumped on it immediately and skipped the rest. I hope you get a BFP very soon!

My husband also had undecended testicals, and a hernia. It was fixed when he was a toddler. He has one underdeveloped and one normal testicle with a count of 8 mil.

Our urologist had him tested for a high estrogen level. She said there is a 3 month therapy to bring it down. The results vary, studies saying its effective others saying it isn't. But the estrogen level has to be significantly higher. I guess the tech told my DH that 45-115 is normal and he is 175.

We meet next week to see if that means therapy or not.

    I hope this works.

    Good luck to all.

Update on DH and Estrogen Level

Met with DH urologist yesterday, because the high estrogen level in his blood work they are giving him clomafine for four months. Then in Oct. they will do a semen analysis to see if it had any effect. In the mean time were to keeping it going.

The Urologist said the good thing about Clomafine is it has very little side effects.

There is a 50/50 chance of this treatment working. Let you know more later

Wow. This is so interesting. My dh had undescended testicles and corrected at age 13. His count was 15mil but we have never gotten pg and did not seek treatment. Our insurance does not cover treatment. We saw a urologist and he recommended we go to an re. My gyn suggested IVF/ICSI.
We just decided against it. I see there is hope for a pregnancy. I am so glad to see the success given this diagnosis.
