Did your dr. prescribe prenatal vitamins?

My OB filled out a prescription for prenatal vitamins and told me to take them instead of over-the-counter prenatals. He said it's because the prescription pills have more folic acid in them. Just wondering if that's the norm?

That's the norm here. I actually didn't know you could buy prenatals otc. I'm surprised my ins will pay for them since there are some available otc.

I was always given the prescription ones by my RE before each of my cyles. I was taking OTC ones while I was BF and when I found out I was pg, the RE called the prescription ones in for me again. They are supposed to have more folic acid in them. I know so many people who just take the OTC ones, which I am sure they are fine.

I've just been taking the OTC ones. Are the prescription ones any smaller? Mine are like swallowing a large jellybean - I have to psych myself up to take them.

I have just been taking the OTC prenatals, I have not even heard of a prescription variety but whether they are any different in Canada or not I don't know. How much folic acid is in the OTC vs prescription?

    barge from Dec

I asked my RE and my former ob/gyn about prescription prenatals, and they both told me not to waste my money. Any vitamin that is called "prenatal" is required to have certain minimum levels of nutrients, which are supposed to be sufficient. Neither my RE nor my OB prescribed vitamins, although they each gave me a ton of samples. But it can't hurt to follow doctor's orders!

Barging in from the August board.

I've been taking OTC prenatal vitamins and peri says thats fine. He did prescribe just folic acid 1000mg in addition because of the twin pregnancy. Otherwise OTC prenatals would have been sufficient by itself. Last time (at 31 weeks) when I said I needed a refill on my folic acid prescription, they said it was just OK to use the OTC 800mg (in addition to the prenatal), go figure. So now I'm wondering if I was just wasting my money on the prescribed ones all this time!

My prenatals have 800mg in them. And yes, mine are big too Amy, I have to take them with milk so I don't taste them. Ugh. I am a big baby when it comes to swallowing big pills.
