Potatoes are a cinch to grow and the kids love to harvest them. I have seen on a show where they used a garbage can to plant the layers and it was amazing how many potatoes you could get out of that contraption. Just be wary of the potato beetle you can't miss them and are big enough to pick off the plant. My dad always had a coffee can with some gasoline and he would go down the rows pick them off and put them into the coffee can.

In a different state I grew them in big plastic tubs (kind of like the garbage can thing I guess). I used those big plastic round tubs with thick white rope as handles that I got at the Dollar Store. I think they are really for toy storage in kids rooms but around here a lot of people use them to haul clothes to the laundromat. Cut some holes in the bottom for drainage and you're all set.

    They worked great.

I like to eat them! I like the Yukon Gold, wonder if I could grow them in Muggy MD?

We plant them here (KY) fairly early. Like march or April. Guessing you are a bit past your season unless you want to work with mulching them heavily to protect them from frost. And actually, mulching with hay is a very easy way to plant them too. Just work the ground up a bit, put down your potatoe seeds, then cover them with a few inches of straw (NOT HAY). As soon as the plants start coming up, put a bit more straw on top, but don't completely cover the green part. The theory is to have the potatoes grow on top of the dirt, but below the straw so they are very easy to harvest.
