Looking for ideas for contemporary songs for funerals...

Sorry, I know that's not the most fun topic, but our visitation pastor asked me if I'd put together a list of contemporary songs that would be appropriate for funerals. She is realizing that the more contemporary stuff is gonna "speak" to people more and more and wants some options for people when she talks with them about their loved ones' funerals.

So far I have this list compiled:

    All My Praise
    Glory Baby
    Held
    Homesick
    I Can Only Imagine
    I’ll Lead You Home
    Psalm 23
    Untitled Hymn
    You Raise Me Up

Do any of you have any other suggestions? And if you have the lyrics, that would be helpful as well - otherwise I know of a Christian lyrics website I can go to.

    Thanks in advance!

Let's see...my background is in country music, so that is the only answer I am going to have, other than what you already have. I thought of "held" and "Homesick" immediately, but, there are some great country songs that have Christian tones to them. Clint Black has a new song called "Back Home in Heaven" that is great.

be back later to post more...

"Dancing with Angels" by Monk & Neagle (new band) is a great contemporary song that you could use. It is about knowing that your loved ones are now dancing with the angels in Heaven.

I'd like to comment that I am one who really really loves the old hymns. I hope you're keeping a nice "mix" of old and new. Truly I've yet to hear a song that moves me the way "How Great Thou Art" does. While I'm all for "singing a new song", I still beleive there is room to keep some of the old ones around. KWIM?

I agree with having a mix of songs. "Amazing Grace" has been sung at all my family's funerals. Three grandparents, mom and uncle.

Also, Jars of Clay (Christian group) is contemporizing (sp--it's 1:30 am) several of the older hymns and they are really good. Tommy and I love "I'll Fly Away" on that CD. He plays it on his guitar.

I see what you are saying - maybe I didn't explain my mission too well!!!

My pastor wants a list of contemporary funeral songs as options for the family of the deceased. She is pretty forward thinking and is realizing that the younger generations may relate to contemporary songs more than some of the old traditional ones. Of course the family members will get to choose whichever songs they like the best, but our pastor wants them to have a wider variety than they've had in the past. They currently only have the traditional ones on their list.

I sang a few contemporary songs at the most recent funeral I did and that is what made our pastor think of this. She asked me to help because I am the vocalist for the contemporary service worship team.

Carlashelle - I heard that Jars of Clay version of I'll Fly Away just yesterday and LOVED IT! I already put it on my list!

Couldn't find this one Heather - I think maybe it's too new. Do you have the cd? If so, could you post the words if they are in the liner?

I couldn't find this one either - are they are Christian group or secular?

    Thanks again everyone!

This is such an awesome song. They are Christian - here are the lyrics:

    Memories surround me
    But sadness has found me
I’d do anything for more time
Never before has someone meant more
And I can’t get you out of my mind
There is so much that I don’t understand
    But I know

    Chorus:
    You’re dancing with the angels
    Walking in new life
    You’re dancing with the angels
    Heaven fills your eyes
Now that you’re dancing with the angels

You had love for your family
    Love for all people
Love for the Father, and Son
    Your heart will be heard
    In you unspoken words
    Through generations to come
There is so much that I don’t understand
    But I know

    Chorus

    Bridge:
We’re only here for such a short time
    So I’m gonna stand up
    Shout out
    And sing Hallelujah
One day I’ll see you again
