    Buying a used Pump

I purchased a used breast pump from someone I know. I did not realize you cannot sterilze the pump itself and it keeps saying over and over in the manuel not to be shared between mothers.

So can I use it or not? I am the third owner of the pump so the lady that sold it to me had used it a couple times. Does anyone have any advice?

I am expecting twins in 10 weeks and I really wanted to have the pump ready and working.

    Any advice would be great.

    Thanks
    Bonnie

I was always told that it is ok to have a used one as long as you replace the parts that actually come in contact with the milk itself. I got a used medalla pump in style from a freind that used it for one child and found a kit that had all of the parts in it from a local breastfeeding store. They also sold the kit on their web site.

Scroll down and look for a post about two weeks ago on the same subject. (ETA-- I "bumped" it up for you. "Pump Questions" posted by Shellg76)
I am using a PIS that is on loan from a friend. I purchased all new parts for it (the "horns", tubing, actually I have used her bottles, but they go through the dishwasher). I have had no problems.

Only closed system pumps are ok per manufacturers instructions. The Medula is not recomended to be shared even with new tubing, shields and bottles.

THAT SAID my pump is a you guessed it a USED Medula pump. It was used by an unknown to me, then my best friend and NOW my sister. I couldnt aford a new pump period. I had twins coming too and decided to take my chances. I believe it is a TINY TINY risk as most big viruses like AIDs can only live a short period of time outside of the body.

I would use the one you have.

I too will be using a borrowed pump from a friend. I bought replacement parts & the manual tells you how to clean the parts you can't replace with alcohol. I don't really have any fears about using it.

I got my pump from my SIL. She used it. I used it. It was fine.

Good luck and congrats on the upcoming arrival of your twins!

It's a used Medula Electric Pump that can do both breasts at the same time.

I guess I better take a better look at it now that I have read these posts.

    I will check back.

    Thanks for all the responses.
