Question Halloween Activities for Christian Families

My son and I went to a playgroup for tots ages 2-5 yesterday. And one of the moms suggested our next playgroup should be potluck and kids dressed in costumes. I don't celebrate Halloween for religious reasons being a devout christian. Though I feel a little guilty, because when I was a kid, I used to go trick-or-treating with my sister and our cousins. There weren't any negative thoughts about it from the adults in our family. It was all fun and games, eventhough we all say we're christians. And I think the adults were having fun too. Watching horror movies and such; eating our candy we brought home. As an adult..Lately I've heard from televangelists that we're not supposed to do all that. That we're inviting demonic activities in our lives. What do you think? If you're a Christian who is thinking about these things, too, what other activites do you suggest for me and my 2 year old son that's just as fun on Halloween?

    Hi There!

I'm sorry this is a little late, I hope you and your son found something to do on Halloween! I know several churches in my area that hold Trunk or Treat events - members all back into a circle and give out candy to the kiddos as they walk by in their costumes. They do this as a safe place for children to go and get candy (as opposed to wandering the streets at night going door-to-door). Personally, I don't see a problem with dressing up - sure, there are scary, potentially demonic costumes out there - but this is like playing dress-up. Lots of kids go as doctors or builders or superheroes - all of these costumes embody positive careers and helping others, which are traits we want to instill in our children. As the mom, I think your son will take from Halloween what you embody - is it something to fear or is something silly? Next year you can go in a themed costume - you can be great explorers or Dorothy and the Tin Man. Whatever you decide to do in the future when it comes to Halloween, I'm sure you and your son will have a fun night!

    Best,
    SC-Kelley
