New Unexplained IF

My DH and I just returned from the RE's office, where she dropped a bomb on us- although she agrees with my condition being diagnosed as PCOS (which we had thought to be the case), she said that I actually fall into the unexplained IF category as I am ovulating regularly, there's no blockage, all tests are normal...SOOOOOO now we're trying to figure out where we stand.

The RE intends to go forward with clomid and IUI, but we're wondering what the probabilities are. She said we have about a 12% chance of success, but also said the eggs may be unsuitable- not an actual diagnosis, just her explaining why we might be IF.

This has been a VERY emotional day, as we had thought we were close to accomplishing our goals. When we all thought it was PCOS, we thought "okay, this is understood, the doctors can treat it, we'll be able to get there". Being unexplained, now we're feeling like we're starting all over, but with diminished chances since they're really just shooting in the dark now.

Im unexplained also. Sometimes it is harder to have it unexplained because they cant just go in and fix it. other times I am grateful that it isnt due to a damged tube or ovary or something else untreatable. There are so many ladies that have unexplained and get pregnant so it can happen for us too! I have tried clomid w/ IUI and now I'm ready to get more aggressive. If I dont see at least 3 follicles after increasing my injectibles I am going to tell him to bring in the big guns! I will do one more cycle with IUI and injectibles and then I will go on to IVF since the chances are greater. Dont be afraid to tell your RE that u are ready to get more aggressive if thats what u want.

I am sorry for your dx but you are not alone! There are many who suffer unexplained infertility. Western medicine labels us as unexplained b/c there is no test to see what we all have worng and they really do not understand the miracle of conception.

Did they do a post coital test. That shows if your CM is compatible with DH's semen. Just a thought!

Hugs to you!

I just joined today, got this website over the internet. We've been married for 6yrs now had 2 lapros done ,1st for PCOs & recent one for tube blockage. My RE said that i didnt have any blockage after the procedure was done.I had 9 cycles of clomid with metamorphin ,coital examination , saline infusion sonohysterogram and so on done .My RE said we come under unexplained category.Next plan of Rx was to take HCG injections for 12 days 2 times a day with IUI.But Now I moved out of state to WI since my hubby got a new job[2 weeks ago] but unfortunately found out yesterday that state of WI is not a mandated state. So none of the insurance provider carry infertility coverage. I have no clue what to do. I am not working currently & my hubbys company doesnt provide infertility coverage.

Ladies, [prg & child ment]
The "unexplained IF" category is the Worst! IMHO -much better to know that you require IVF b/c of a damaged tube, know that you have to take clomid in order to ovulate, or know that your husband has low sperm count and just wait it out...

I feel that there is a reason for unexplained IF and it is usually immune issues. Undetected immune issues that regular RE's and OB's are not experienced enuf nor specialize in the testing and treatment of these issues.

Lil poot, here is a quote from a website which shows how PCOS often links to immune issues: PAI-1 is
> sometimes associated with PCOS and the treatment for this is is
> Metformin ( as I see you are taking below). Have you had your
> fasting free insulin levels checked? See Dr Beer article about
PCOS,

It helped me lots to know there was another area to investigate when I battled thru unexplained IF and very early prg. loss -some women are actually conceiving each month and don't know it b/c they don't get beta blood draws done to show them that they may be conceiving with really low beta numbers -I had this and was proven to be suffering from early implantation failure (a sure sign of Immune Issues) as you can see by my siggy the unexplained was resolved in 2002 with my only successful prg.

pls ladies, chk out the Immune Issues here and read and see if you fit the profile of someone who may have immune issues... -it may be the beginning of a path that leads to a successful prg
here is another wee chart that shows how many people that are experiencing recurrent m/c (and also unexplained IF if they are suffering from implantation failure) actually may have immune issues:

Cause Percent
Infection 1%
Anatomy abnormal 5-10%
Progesterone level low 20%
Chromosome abnormal
Primary miscarrier (no live births) 7%
Secondary miscarrier (one or more live births) 50%
Immune mechanisms 50%
Unknown 15%

I hope this helps everyone and wishing you all best of luck,
Ally
