Welp, after years and years of being treated for PCOS and many cycles of IUI, 1 MC and 1 IVF and back to IUI, my new RE suggested a Lap/Hysteo (dont know why no one else thought to do the procedure....) I did the surgery last Friday and it turns out that I am absolutley "clean", nothing was detected and my RE put me in the unexplained category.

What now? Do I give up? Do I just stop treatment? I just turned 40 on the 11th and what started out as a happy go lucky 40th year for me has turned dismal at best. I have my post -op appointment on the 9th and I have no idea what my RE is going to suggest. Can anybody offer some of their experiences with unexplained infertility? Any happy endings? Now that the reality of this has set in I am so, so sad.

I'm sorry that you have a new diagnosis to digest after all you have been through.
I have a simliar story actually. I was dx'd as PCOS back in 1997. I had not had an AF in over 3mths, the hospital did an u/s and saw lil cysts on my ovaries, and with my bloodwork and hormone levels it was discovered i had PCOS. So for the next 2 yrs we were treated as PCOS patients. I then saw a new Ob/gyn--whom i didn't care for but had no choice in the matter(we're military) and when he did my lap in 1999 he changed my dx as Unexplained simply because my ovaries and everything else looked textbook perfect. Simply because my ovaries had no notable cysts, i was given the unexplained dx. PCOS is not only about cysts on your ovaries....it's about hormone levels. Not all pcos patients have cysts on their ovaries just as not all pcos women are overweight. There are varying degrees. What you should do is go through your old labworks and look at your hormone levels. Most pcos women have high testosterone, low estrogen, low progesterone(after ovulation) have a hard time ovulating, do not get their periods on a regular basis, etc. Now if all of your bloodwork is perfectly normal then yes, maybe you were wrongly diagnosed. Basically what it all boils down to is your hormone levels...that will tell you the real story on your diagnosis. Thankfully i got a different dr who said yes, you are most definitely PCO. Thanks Jenn, for your input and advice! I am actually considered a "perfect responder" without results of course. All of my numbers have always been "perfect" every cycle. Hormone levels are always exactly where they are supposed to be, and almost every IUI cycle I started ovulating before my HCG injection, which I took anyway to "boost" ovulation. Every cycle that I do at home Ovulation tests, I get a positive for ovulation. This so sucks! I totally feel defeated! I wish my post-op appointment was sooner then the 9th, I just feel really lost and without answers.

As I stated up there... I did manage to achieve 1 pregnancy via IUI, which ended in MC at my 3 and a half month point, they classified it as Chromosonal (sp). Im begining to believe that somethings are not meant to be, which is a piss poor attitude, especially for my character and I really hate feeling this way. I totally feel broken

I hope you don't mind me posting. My OB/GYN and RE have never found a reason as to why DH and I couldn't get pg on our own. All the tests came back normal and clear. It is so extremely frustrating when you have no reason as to why it's not happening. During all my cycles I responded "beautifully" as my RE put it. I did 3 cycles of Clomid and IUI, and then 3 cycles of injectible Follistim and IUI. No luck, all BFN, even though I produced good eggs each time.

Next step was IVF. We did IVF #1 in November of 2005. It did result in a pg, however my beta #'s came in low and I had a miscarriage. IVF#2 was in February of this year and it was successful. No miscarriage this time.

Don't give up treatments. Honestly, and this is just my opinion, but I would look into doing IVF again. Unexplained is so hard to deal with because you just have no freaking answers, you're right...you're just lost.

Have you looked into acupuncture? I have heard of a lot of ladies using it with IVF and being successful. There was a IF mag in my RE's office that showed a European study showing a 43% increase success rate with IVF and acupuncture.

Good luck to you and please don't give up. Yeah, I realize that's easy for me to say right now, but I have been in your position before and know how **** difficult it is. You will be successful.

Thank you Tiffany, I am SO trying to be positive. We are moving to Metformin for 3 months and then on to IVF, with fingers crossed. Congrats on your BFP!! That is very good news!
