What Should I Expect When See A Infertility Specalist ?

Hi everyone I'm finally going to take the pluge and see a fetility specialist , I wanting to know what I should expect in my frist vist .

I have PCOS and have lost a child a year ago at 9 weeks along.

I was placed on clomid in order to conceive but after I lost the baby was on it again for 6 months and it didn't work.

I was told to wait 6 months before I tryed again in order to allow my body to rest.

I have always seen a gyno but I'm wanting to go to someone who knows what that are doing and can help increase my chances.

What should I expect in my frist vist and what treatments will they perhaps offer or blood test done?

What would be the next step after the clomid ?

What questions should I ask?

How much is most procedures ?

If you can answer these questions be a HUGE help!

Hi, I am so sorry for your loss. I imagine that after getting a full history they would want to do some bloodwork possibly checking your FSH, your insulin (since you mentioned PCOS), a thyroid panel as well. Assuming that your ob has done a lot of prelimary tests they would review those to decide of course.
They may consider checking your tubes for possible blockage.

I am not a dr, so I don't know if they would consider increasing your clomid dosage for a few cycles, before posssibly moving onto injectibles.

I don't know the cost of the b/w or the injectibles.

I do wish you the best as you venture on this new chapter of the IF journey,
Pecan

Very sorry about your loss. I have to say that after this amount of time it is the right thing to go to a specialist. I agree with Pecan that if your Gyn has already done some bloodwork (recently) you should see if you can get copies forwarded to your RE before your appointment.

I don't know the costs related to blood work and initial testing, but most preliminary work is covered by insurance. It's when you get into assisted things that they sometimes won't help (like injectibles, u/s to go with a cycle, IUI, IVF, etc). Really, your initial stuff should be covered. I would call your insurance and see if A. you need a referral, B. If you need an RE that is 'in network', and C. If they do cover blood tests etc, as well as if they cover any IUI's. I remember that for a while my insurance covered NO iui's, but an alternate insurance through dh's work did for up to 3 IUI's...so we changed for one year so 3 IUI's would be covered, and then switched back! Every little bit can help!!

Good luck!!

Thank you all for your helpful comments !

A little of my history so might be of help:

I got married 4 years ago it will be May 3rd and we had decided the frist year I was married to be on brith control a year.

BAD IDEA!!

I was on 5 different kinds of brith control all of them gave me severe pain in my overies and lower back so much so I would be balwed up in the bed crying.

At one point while on the brith control I had estrogen posioning really bad and was way sick.

It go to a point the pain was so severe I had to finally go to a gyno and get checked out .

The did all kinds of blood tests I belive one was for PCOS and thryroid problems along with some other test been so long don't remember.

They found I don't have the PCOS on the blood work it shows I don't have it but they did a ultra sound and found my overies where covered with the cyits.

That is how I was diagnosed and then placed on Metformin 500mg twice a day.

I was told this would regulate my periods and help the insulin from going to my overies causing the cycits .

I also was having tons of infections around the time they found this all out also.

Then I wanted to have a baby so they placed me on the frist 6 rounds of clomid.

I took 2 rounds went for the lab results they said my blood levels where to low to be pregnant but........................

A few short weeks latter I was into the 3rd round took 3 pills and was starting to feel sick I laughed told mom hey I maybe pregnant and we did the tests and was confirmed.

I was considered high risk because of the PCOS and the insulin so at 4 weeks pregnant they used that wand on me.

I kept bleeding each time to was done I would bleed they had me bed fast and on meds to keep the baby.

They finally sent me to a high risk specalist everything seemed fine but with each ultra sound I would bleed till I found out one day baby was gone.

I went 6 months latter was on clomid again with no luck andf now 6 months after that going to this specalist.

My husband has not been tested yet so sure they will want to do that and maybe a ultra sound to check my oveires again to see how the cyists look now after 2 years.

That sums my history up so far if would help.

I go march 1st to the fertility specalist
