"Am I Mixed?"

DD has asked me this question at least 5 times this summer. She is 10 - so I think she should be able to understand intellectually what this term means and her racial make-up.

Her Bio mom is black - all indications are Bio Dad is Native American (South American). DD's hair is wavy - curly - but not the really curly hair that you think of with a bi-racial child (back/white). Her skin is darker than the average person from South America and she was teased about this when she was living there.

I a not sure what her real question is - and she has not expressed it - or not chosen to express it!

Anyone else have children who are racially mixed and seem confused about how to fit themselves into a "Box".

I have tried to tell her that God put together people from 2 continents to create her - she is not buying that either

I'm not sure if this will help but...I'm biracial, though not an obvious one. My mom is Korean and my dad is white so we joke that I'm beige. When we lived in Korea I was not accepted as Korean and when we finally moved to the states I was teased about the way I spoke--my Korean was better than my english.

Anyhow, my parents told me I was lucky because I got the best of both worlds. That answer didn't always work for me but it has stuck with me all these years. For the most part I just had to work it out on my own.

I'm a mommy of a biracial little princess. she looks black. I heard a story once about a mom who went to the store and bought red, green, and yellow apples. she showed them to her daughter and asked why they were different. of course color. then they cut them up. what was inside? the daughter said they looked the same. then they tasted them......mmmm...each had a different flavor, but they were all wonderful!

little girls are made by God with love. different on the outside. the same on the inside and just delicious with love.

best of luck with your heart and hers,
melanie
