Holiday, days of special observance, etc...how do they help your spiritual growth?

Most spiritual paths have recurring events, holidays, days of special observance, etc. How have these days helped you in your spiritual growth?

Currently they are reminders of my faith. I was getting "into" the more detailed mini celebrations of our church but have fallen away from it. I enjoy learning of mine as well as other faith's celebrations are interesting learning experiences that add to my spiritual growth. On the down side, many holidays are very painful for me and I mostly am distracted by my own emptiness of not having children. I realize this is selfish, but it seems to be hurting my spiritual enjoyment. Perhaps it is a matter of growth, but it kind of bites.
