We decided to try for another child after LO was 6 months old. Decided to start early just in case. Well the just in case has turned into a reality. Went off BCP and after the first month my cycles got longer and longer. Did 6 months natural before deciding that it was time to see a RE. I got out of the military in Aug 11. So ended up at the Jones Institue as this is the only RE that my insurance uses. No coverage for IVF or IUI. So those ar eout of pocket. Thankfully the medicine is covered through our pharmacy company. Didn't want to go straight to IVF again. Hopeful that IUI's would work. Well we are waiting to start our last IUi before the RE wants to do IVF. Thought TTC #2 wouldn't be so hard if it ended up we needed help. Boy was I wrong! 6th month of trying and I want to scream and cry all over again. Am I crazy to put myself and my husband through this again? Almost lost my marriage the first time around.

Hi Sherbear. As someone who has been trying for #2 for almost 4 years - no, I don't think you're crazy at all. I'm just sorry it's been so stressful. What's your diagnosis? What worked in the past? It's hard when you're limited to seek treatment by insurance. We don't have insurance so we're paying for everything, including meds, out-of-pocket. What type of treatment are you pursuing now?

Sherbear and juilaB; theres a ton of support here for secondary infertility (though if seems sher has been here before). Jones Institute maybe the only RE that your insurance will cover, but if you decide to try another RE, we here at Fertile Thoughts have directions to point you in terms of insurance coverage and RE's for specific conditions or needs or just geography. Good luck to you.

Currently taking Gonal-f (150IU)/Metformin 2000MG/ Ovidrel) On day 2 of stims. Go in again on fri to check levels and follicles. Once all looks right we will be doing IUI again.

I feel blessed that I don't have to pay ultrasound or blood draw costs just the IUI itself. Got a copay of $20 for those appointments. Just pay the sperm wash and IUI out of pocket. Meds have been covered too. Just copays. Still trying to figure out what we want to do if this IUI doesn't work.

Sherbear - how are you tolerating the metformin? I just started it and I'm miserable. I'm on 500 XR twice a day and I was literally lying on the bathroom floor for 2 hours this morning. I have a phone call with my RE today so we'll see if we can adjust things a bit!

Hey Sherbear,
No, I don't think you're crazy. I think anyone should be able to try for as many children as they want and can support. Why shouldn't we be able to just because we have to go through IF? Granted, the cycles are tough, but only you can be the judge of what you are/are not willing to do to build your family. Best of luck to you!

Metformin hasn't been too bad for me. But I have also been on it for 5 + years. Just had my dosage upped from 1500 to 2000 and no bad side effects so far. I remeber when I first started it my stomache was horrible. But then they put me on the XR and helped out a lot.
