It frustrates the hell out of me how these progressive democrats are still adamantly expressing their opposition to gay marriage. Now I understand that they feel that they HAVE to say that - but sheesh - shouldn't this be a non-issue by now?

Is it the word marriage you want? Or just the bene's that come with it. Personally, I'm ok with calling it civil unions, or unions or something along those lines IF it get FEDERAL bene's, not just state ones.

What drives me crazy is that people who are supposed to be progressive - are so comfortable in drawing this distinction - just like the bad old days of separate but equal. Not to mention that it includes an implication that somehow fundamental christianity is somehow the national religion. My religion (reform judaism) recognizes my marriage - so to say the government can't because that should be reserved for religions - mmm not so much.

I am one of the lucky few that is married now. But it is not reg by the feds. I think if they were to truly have it equal then it does not matter what it is called, however i do not think it would be truly equal ever unless it is called a marriage. I think if they wanted to call it somewhat somethign diffretn just add civil in front of it, make it a civil marriage that would pretty mcuh solve the issue of it not being a religios marriage but still a marriage that is reg.
My 2 cents.Heather

I personally am really not into the whole marriage thing. I'd do it if it got us federal bene's, but other than that, it's not a big deal to me. We are two people who are raising 3 kids and doing the best we can.
Would a piece of paper make it any different? No, not really. Not even in a hetero marriage, either. Just gives you more bene's....and less paperwork!
But I know I"m in the minority on this. And maybe it would be different if we were young again and stuff but since we've been together coming up on 19 years (if we make it to that) it really doesn't matter to me.
civil marriage.. Interesting. Don't think "the other side" would go for that.

O.K. what really is pissing me off are the Yes On 8 pop-ups that are coming up ON THIS WEBSITE!!! We really need to complain!! I feel that it is offensive and inappropriate. I'm not sure how they screen advertising on this site, but it really upsets me.
I believe in separation of church and state. Government shouldn't be in the marriage business, but since it is...it should be for all.

Barge from a hetero Republican - I would go for it. Marriage is simply a contract between two people. I have no problem with the CHURCHES defining marriage their way within their walls, and I have no problem with the CHURCHES choosing who they will and won't marry, but the GOVERNMENT should ensure that all people are equal and have equal rights.

Thanks Crystal!
I must say that you are one Rep that I have nothing but admiration for (even if I am a liberal demo), because you are so true to your libertarian beliefs and so clear on what is fair on civil rights issues. That said, you are one of the few, unfortunately. I wish that there were more of you out there.
I'm wondering...are the "Yes On 8" pop ups just coming up here in CA or are they everywhere? It's really making me want to boycott FT!
Amy, as a moderator, can you complain about this. They are even coming up on this thread! So insulting!
