POF & I want a baby!

I am so lost right now! I need someone's advice I guess. I was just diagnosed with POF and am 24 years old. My Hubby and I really want children... and I would love to be pregnant. How do I know what is best for me?? Egg donor, embryo donor, adoption. Did anyone go through something similar? I need some support and advice..

Thank you!

June07: Hi! Sorry you've had to come here, but FT is a good place to be when you've heard some hard news.

Be sure to jump over to the high FSH board if you can. Most of us are over there. Also, you might check out the Pregnancy with Donor Gametes on the Pregnancy board, and I think it's called Donor Issues on the Infertility board.

Do you have an "official" POF diagnosis, meaning no menstruation for 12 months and at 2 FSH readings of 40 or higher taken at least 30 days apart? If you don't have this, you may still be able to get pg, but it depends a lot on your particular situation.

Also, donor egg and embryo are a great way to go, but it's not something to rush into. You have to do some research and know that it will be expensive. Depending on your health insurance (if you have coverage), some insurance companies will actually pay for a portion of the donor egg IVF cycle. I almost went that route (our 4th IVF was successful- the one I almost didn't do- our next one was going to be DE- I was already looking at donors); I wanted our children to have a bio link to my husband. and here in Illinois, my insurance was going to cover all of the expenses except for the donor fee and the agency fee which would have added up to about $12,500. Still very steep, but know that the live birth rates for donor egg are really high per cycle- somewhere along the line of 70A-80% per cycle (compare that to a "normal" IVF cycle, where the success rates are more in the 40% range). Also, because you usually get a lot of good quality embryos from donor egg, you have embryos on ice for siblings!

I don't know much about donor embryo, but like I said, please check out the high FSH board, the Donor Issue board (both on the INFERTILITY board) and the Pregnancy with Donor Gametes board on the pregnancy board.

You will find a lot of support here.

Either way, remember, you will be a mother. This is not an easy journey, nor is it a road any of us would choose. But there are options. Do your research, get the facts, get support, and weigh your options. Your child will find its way to you.

Montygat..CONGRATULATIONS! I am so happy for you. We are in the early stages getting labs and all to decide if I can try using my own eggs. One doc says no, we went to second. Stories like yours keep me hopeful!

June, I have POF as well. I was dx'd 1999. I was able to conceive using donor embryos. It's much cheaper that donor eggs.
