Hi all have just found out I am pregnant with twins, I had Ist ultrasound at 5weeks when we saw one baby, had 2nd ultrasound at 7weeks to check viability as I have had previous delayed misscarraiges and this time we saw 2 babies and 2 strong heartbeats. US results read twin pregnancy, single gestation sac with possible fine setum between and rescan in 5 weeks to determine chorionicity, I have absolutely no idea what this means and am also concerned at the length of time between ultrasounds, can anyone help please...

Congratulations! It means you are having identical twins (ID twins for short). A little known fact is that all babies are actually in 2 sacs. The first is called the amniotic sac. The second is called a chorion. Your babies are in the same chorion, but in separate amnionic sacs. This is the most common way for ID twins to be. It means they will share a placenta. It is also called monochorionic-Diamniotic twins (or mo-di for short). It is higher risk than twins who do not share a placenta, but these days they are able to watch you so closely with u/s that everything will be just fine.
In 5 wks, you'll be 12wks. I'm a little surprised they have you waiting 5wks, but at the same time, that is still a perfectly fine time to do another u/s. They are looking to make sure their are 2 amniotic sacs. It can be hard to find the membrane separating the two. I'm glad they already think they found it because it is important.
Congratulations! Welcome to the wild ride of twins!!Heather

Wow.. thank you very much for the information Stargazerlily, I am still a little bit overwhelmed by it all. will have to do a lot of research lol. I have midwife appointment next week so will ask for an earlier scan as I dont think I can cope with the anxiety of waiting 5 weeks for U/S. I had a delayed miscarraige in January and dint find out until routine dating scan that there was any problems, there was no heartbeat found and growth had stopped at 8 weeks it was devastating and I am petrified of the same happening again .

You're like me! You and I are both having Monochorionic/Diamniotic (or Mo/Di) twins!
Mine are girls and I'm 29w5d along. FYI your twins WILL definitely be the same gender, so either 2 girls or 2 boys
. Congratulations!!! I know it's quite a shocker to see that on the screen at an ultrasound, I almost hyperventilated! lol

carebear, Id ask the OB or RE for another scan! OB's are a bit more laid back, at least mine is. Ive been in the RE office for an u/s every week since 6 wks and have another next week at 9wks before they release me to my OB...this is partially bc Ive had some bleeding but hte other part is Ive had 3 m/cs in the past and Im very worried! Doesnt hurt to ask. Play the crazy pregnant lately if you need to, lol...

Thanks for asking! I went on November 20th and they couldn't see anything (again) so they sent me to the ER for another scan. They saw 1 sac with a heartbeat (5w4d)!! I'll go back on December 11th for another check up. I will be 8w4d and I'm kind of nervous. I know it sounds stupid to worry but I have NO pregnancy symptoms. I should probably just be thankful I am not sick all the time and got to see the heartbeat but I guess I've got to be nuts about something, right?
