Hello friend,
Just curious what you use/plan on using in your nursery (or wherever you'll do most of the changing). To be honest, I'm not at all excited to change 1 or 2 diaper genie bags a day with twins. I read the diaper champ can use regular garbage bags but may not trap the smell as well. Then I read if you have twins, just skip both and use a 13 gallon garbage can. What is everyone doing on this front? If I'm going to drop that kind of cash for a genie and the millions of refills, it better be magic!

A garbage can with a good lid that seals down...you can get those baking soda discs with the suction cup that is made for your refrigerator and stick it to the top under the garbage can lid. The diaper genie does really become a money trap and makes another reason you have to go to the store for bag inserts. Do we cloth now...we use the diaper genie with no bags. I know I have seen other pails in babiesrus that looks like normal garbage pails but with a built in smell blocker.

Save yourself a ton of cash and cloth diaper. Check out the alternative parenting board for more info. We used cloth for our singleton and then for our twins.

My best friend has 3 year old twins and she told me first off not to get a diaper genie because of the refills. She said if you're going to get one of those systems get one that accepts different kinds of bags. That being said, she also said I'd be better off just having a regular garbage can. We got a metal one with a lid. I like the tip above about getting one of those baking soda sticky things. I plan on using that garbage can just during night changes, and the rest of the time me or DH will just take the dirty diapers right out to the garage garbage can. Eww!

Ash, my thoughts exactly. I'm leaning toward getting a good garbage can with a lid, then just taking the daytime stinkies straight to the outside garbage. How are you feeling by the way? Our fertility histories are very similar, even 11 frozen blasts. You're about 8 weeks ahead of me. Good luck, you're almost there!

Haha This is a good question... I have been thinking about it... diaper genie just seems like one of those silly commercialized things that you just DONT need. At least thats my opinion. I just planned on getting a good trash can also.

I used the diaper champ with my DD and plan to use it again - I have one on each floor. They do tend to get a little stinky, but not as stinky as opening a garbage can full of diapers. (I've tried that too. The smell poured out every time I opened it. And this was the kind meant for diapers where you put a fresh filter at the top every 3 months. I just didn't work.) For our upstairs champ, I put it in my laundry room and put in one of those air fresheners that "poofs" every so often. That controlled the minor stinkyness. For downstairs, I kept it in the garage.

volleyballer - thats right, we are pretty similar huh! Things are going ok...I've actually been in the hospital since Sunday morning for cramping/contractions and then when that went away, now my blood pressure is up. Ugh! I'm hoping I can keep them in until 36 weeks - just 10 more days - but I guess they will come when they come. I'm at 34w5d now so I guess thats decent if they do decide to make their appearance sooner rather than later. Had a positive fetal fibronectin result on Sunday, so...its just a waiting game now! How are things with you? Do you have names picked out?

We have three pails - two baby trends and a munchkin (with baking soda). We like them because it does contain the smell BUT the baby trends jam up. Now the munchkin is AMAZING. No smell at all because of the deoderizer and it is easy to change the bags (but you need special bags). DH and I agree that for the next time around we will only use the munchkin since it works so smell.
DH was throwing diapers into one of our good trash cans - that practice stopped quickly due to the odor. You would get used to it while in the house but if you walked out and came back in - YUCK.1st on our own missed miscarriage at 10 weeks (triploidy)

We have a champ and like it. The best thing about it is that you can use regular garbage bags in it. I can't remember how often we took out the diaper trash when they were newborns, but now they are 10 months and it goes out 2-3 times per week. It does get a little stinky, but that's when we know it has to go out!
Just something to consider: when your babies get older, they will be pulling up on everything and trying to open things, knock things over, pull stuff out. The Champ is baby-proof- even if they pulled it over they could not get the diapers out. I would advise getting something a mobile baby can't open.
We also have a diaper changing area in our bedroom (one-story house)- we just used a plastic grocery bag in there when we used it more often when they were newborns and then threw that bag into the kitchen trash or took it out to the big can.
