vanishing twin ?

Hi its not official that I will be joining you ladies. My beta was a little high and my nurse cordinator thought maybe it was twins. She knows that I wasn't holding her to her guess and I understand an U/S is the only way to know for sure. My beta was 6dt5dt=65, 8dp5dt=231 with a doubling time of 26.24hrs.

My question is how do you prevent vanishing twin and is it very common? I now am worried about that. I think with every positive there is another worry lurking around the corner.

Looking at my beta do any of you think maybe I'll be here in my future? My U/S isn't until the week before Thanksgiving and it so long away.

Hi ocean, congrats on the bfp! Your 8dp5dt sounds close to my 11dp3dt (in my signature), so it's possible that you are having twins. Numbers can vary so much that it is hard to be sure until you see the u/s (as you said).
There is no way that I am aware of to prevent a vanishing twin. My doctor said that if you have two good HB at a 9 week u/s then the risk for a vanishing twin is very low. At my 7 week u/s my doc said that there was still a 20% chance of a vanishing twin (both had good HBs). How far along will you be at the u/s?

Hi ocean,
I was pregnant with twins and had a vanishing twin at 7 weeks, but my doctor told me that sometimes it's best because the strong will survive. Which it still stinks to pregnant with twins and lose one but there is no way to prevent it and the strong will survive. And that's the blessing we have prayed for a strong healthy baby.

lighthouse I'll be 6 weeks and a few days at the first u/s. I've had alot of cramping this weekend and I am going to call to get a beta done this week. I'll see how the progression with the numbers are going. This cramping has me so worried I feel like every move I make causes a pulling or cramps. Thank you for your help.

How far along do you need to be that you don't need to worry about it anymore?

Congratulations on your BFP. You numbers sound promising, but as you know it could go either way. I am 13wks 6 days pregnant with my second set of twins. Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent vanishing twin. It's just like an early m/c with one. There's no way to stop it if it's going to happen. I stop worry about it after about 10wks. The highest risk like pp said is before about 9wks and it drops way off after that. It goes down very quickly after you see the first heartbeat. By the start of the second trimester, you can plan on two babies. Tragedies do happen after that, but it's rare and it's not vanishing twin anymore.

As for the cramping, I always have some pretty strong cramping early on in my pregnancies, both with my single and both sets of twins. I thought my period was definitely going to start. Good thing it didn't. Good luck!!!

dito what stargazer said, at 7 weeks exactly I had some bleeding and my RE (that is 2 hrs away) said it could possible be a vanishing twin episode BUT thankfully it was just typical common bleeding that alot of women get.

hang in there, I know it is hard, I worry all of the time too
