Gestational sacs much different size at 5.5 weeks
I went for my first ultrasound at RE's office, and ultrasound tech said that she was 'seeing' 2 gestational sacs. One is masuring 5.5 weeks, and she didn't give me an estimate on the other. I do have pictures, and the smaller one is about a quarter of the size of the larger one. Should I be worried?? It was too early for a heartbeat, so neither one had a hearbeat.
As many of you know, the shock that I am having twins hasn't worn off, and now I am wondering if this second baby will be viable? I go back in one week fr another ultrasound, but the wait is killing me. Any thoughts from the group- good or bad- would be appreciated. Thanks

At 5wk5d, I had two sacs. One measured 5wks5d with a yolk sac, the other measured 5wk3d with nothing in it. They said that it was normal. At 7wk0d, we saw two HB. I think as long as the difference is less than a week apart, you should be fine. Good luck!

Thanks- I'm not sure the days for the smaller baby, because they didn't give me one. The larger baby was 5w5d, which was right on. So, I guess I just have to wait and see.
Thanks

Haven't checked in here in a while. If you are going just based on sight and they didn't give you the number of weeks/days for the second one I would say there is no need to worry. More than likely it is the angle that the u/s was at that made one look so much smaller. When I was 5 weeks along we saw two sacs, one with a fetal pole and the other empty with a blood clot around it. I was sure the second was not viable but at my next u/s apt (close to 7 weeks) we had two perfect h/b's. I now have two healthy, happy 2 year olds to show for all the worrying I did. lol... take a deep breath and as hard as it is try and relax. Can't wait for an update!!

Thanks everybody. I go in for u/s this Wednesday, which would put me at 6w5d. Hopefully we'll see some growth.
Thanks for the words of encouragement.

Update
At todays ultrasound, one baby was measuring right on target. H/B at 122, good size! The other baby hadn't progressed much, and there was no fetus present. U/s tech said that Baby B was not where it should be size wise, and often times one will just stop growing.
I go back in one week for another u/s, but I am not holdoing out much hope. Baby A was twice the size of Baby B, and there was no fetus to be seen in Baby B- and she looked for a while. Feeling conflicted- so happy one is doing well, but sad that it appears we have lost one.

Angie, I'm sorry you are going through this. One woman in my cycle group lost a twin very early- vanishing twin syndrome. Another woman in my cycle group had a disparity that did not resolve until the 8-week ultrasound, when the smaller baby had caught up. (I can't recall the size difference) One of my twins (now 25 weeks) has always been slightly smaller than the other but less than a weeks' disparity.
I am very happy for you that it looks like you have one healthy baby in there! If it works out with baby b, all the better. Goodluck! |
