H1N1 virus vaccine - are you going to get it?
Hi,
I am curious if other pregnant FTers out there are planning to get the H1N1 virus vaccine? Please explain your decision. Thanks.

I am going to get it. There are some weird results with the CDC that is is killing a higher percentage of healthy pregnant women and they don't know what the correlation is. In europe they are actually recommending that you wait to get pregnant till after flu season. I am also a critical care nurse and take care of influenza patients so am at much higher risk.
scary, huh! |

U really shouldn't have any reaction to a flu shot, regular or otherwise. They are an inactive (dead) virus. Anyone who get the sick after the shot, probably already had contracted it before the shot. The only side effect is a sore arm

I talked to someone who works in the field- an immunologist- and then to my perinatologist. Both of them recommended getting both. My employer offers the seasonal flu shot for free, but I asked my doctor if there was a special shot for pregnant women, he said "You should receive the inactivated, thamerisol-free vaccine safe for pregnant mothers." I called and my employer said I need to get it from my doctor. Good thing I asked!

I work in a hospital. I"ve already been exposed once and am on Tamiflu for prophylaxis. I'm certainly going to be exposed again (and again and again). Even if it only works partially in preventing illness, it's worth it to me.

My Dr strongly recommended to get the regular flu shot but told me that medically she needs to encourage the H1N1 shot as well but then went on to explain that when she spoke to infectious disease specialists at the hospital, none of them could guarantee that neither myself nor my twins wouldnt suffer from negative long term effects from the vaccine bc it hasnt been studied diligently enough at this point. That was enough for me to say "No thanks".

Oh Deb that is scary!
I was at my OB visit yesterday and in the waiting room, the receptionist and another patient were talking about "30 pregnant women have died from H1N1" so far. I find the prospect of death very scary too... A friend of mine emailed me this link to Dr. Sears' website where he talks about it: AskDrSears - The Vaccine Book I am going to get it and hope that my doctor and many others are right that it acts just like the regular flu vaccine only with a different strain... |
