Weight gain in 1st trimester?

hi--can anyone share please how much they gained in the 1st trimester?

The docs/books say 3-5 lbs is average/healthy--i have gained 7-8...(and 12 wweks) I am SO lucky I am not throwing up--bread/cheese have helped with the nauseau....in general my eating patterns have changed (a tad less healthy)-still exercising 5-6 days a week---should i be worried about the gain? my doc said it's not great but not to worry too much--so curious about others' experiences--thanks! Laura

I would not worry about gaining early. Once you get into the later stages, you run out of room and you can barely eat. Plus for most, it seems heart burn is terrible and that hinders eating as well. I had it so bad that I could only eat certain things, because so much gave me bad bad heartburn. So I would say enjoy eating now, because it doesn't last the entire pregnancy. lol!! When I delivered a few weeks ago at 35w4d, my uterus was measuring over 50 weeks. I had been measuring full term since about 26w or so. With multiples you just run out of room.

Good luck
Stacy

Only a couple of pounds for me b/c I had gotten sick with the flu..however, I've gained about 15 lbs so far (I'm 19 weeks now). With my first son, I gained a total of 28 lbs. Most of it gained in the second trimester so I feel like I am on the same track as last time. Didn't gain much in the third. I'm not worried b/c of it being twins and I am feeling really good. They say with twins, 1 1/2 lbs per week is average in the second trimester (oh my!) - think it's about the same as a singleton in the first trimester for many though.

I didn't gain very much at first and all of a sudden the pounds are coming on. I am 13 weeks today and I think I have gained about 7 lbs.

I also have been concerned about weight gain with a twin pregnancy. This is my first pregnancy past 8 weeks. Laura, your weight gain in the first trimester is great, according to Dr Luke's medical advice regarding a multiple pregnancy and weight gain. Keep up the good work!

Unfortuantly, in my first trimester, I hadn't gained anything. In fact, at one of my appt's I had lost 1/2 pound. I was concerned because I didn't have any morning sickness and my appetite was pretty ravenous so I wasn't understanding where the heck the weight was going.... I am now in the second trimester and I have a small pregnancy belly and am hoping that I have gained a couple of pounds at least! I have been following Dr Luke's book/diet and am hoping that it is working. I do agree with Stacyleigh, I have really bad heartburn sometimes which completely takes away my appetite.

My Mom was telling me that she didn't really gain any serious weight until her third trimester, but that was with singelton pregnancies. I am hoping that with the second trimester, I will begin to see a hefty weight gain. I want the weight gain now so that later in the pregnancy, if they have to be delivered earlier than expected, they will have some weight on their side. And I have also been told that your appetite becomes none existent in the third trimester due to the lack of space.

Hi, I am in my 8th week with twins (IVF). I have been really worried about this issue, as I am already overweight. I haven't been exercising because first I felt like crap during the stimming, then I was sore, then on bedrest, then I didn't want to start anything during 2ww, then I was afraid to do anything lest I miscarry, then I had uterine bleeding at my 6w u/s, they told me to take it easy and if I started bleeding vaginally I'd have to be on bedrest. Finally, today the bleeding had subsided and they gave me the clear to walk and swim. I have gained about 6 lbs since the IVF started- so about 2.5 months. I feel huge!

Who is Dr. Luke? Is there a book I should know about? My first pg ended in m/c but I bought several books, so I don't have anything on twins. Help! I have my first OB appointment on Friday, so hopefully he can shed some light on this issue...

Bebe,
I completely understand how you are feeling.

I gained about 11 pounds in the first trimester and now at almost 32 weeks I have gained just over 30.

I was worried at first about gaining too much because my BMI was in the overweight category when I got pregnant. I also was terrified of another miscarriage and really took it REALLY easy the entire pregnancy.

Every doctor appointment I would ask about my weight gain and if it was appropriate. My doc said it is ok to gain early with twins as their growth tends to slow earlier than a singleton.

I am sure everything will be just fine and we will lose the extra weight BFding and chasing around 2 little ones!

Best of Luck to you!

Isis- thanks for your encouraging message! You are right, breastfeeding and running around after 2 kids is going to do the trick!

I gained absolutely nothing during the first trimester. I was not sick at all, but still to this point (I am currently 28 weeks with b/g twins) I have only gained 6 lbs. total. I was overweight to begin with so my OB only gave me a total gain of 10-15 lbs. 20 at the most. So I am thankful that I haven't packed on the lbs. too quickly. I think every single pregnancy is different so it's hard to compare.
