Cerclage or not?

Hi everyone, I am 13wks and I wonder how many of you with twins had to have a cerclage? This is my first pregnancy and I am not worried about IC. My peri said that he is going to start measuring my cervix at 14wks and make sure everything is ok, but I feel like should I just ask him to put one in anyway even though I do not have a history?

I did not have one with my twins - - that was my first and only pregnancy so I didn't have any history of needing one. My OB didn't even start measuring the cervix until much later in the pregnancy. She said she didn't want to affect the area unless I was feeling cramps or pressure down there. Congrats and good luck!

Hi,

Most OB/Peris will NOT place a cerclage unless there is a history/medical condition that warrants it, so I don't think your asking him to place one will achieve any results. (sorry!)

That said, I had a cerclage placed on an emergency basis in my second twin pregnancy. I needed it as my cervix had shortened from over 4cm to just 2.7 in 6 days time and I had lost my prior set of twins to premature birth/neonatal death due to possible IC, ptl and PROM.

I agree with the others, I don't believe one should be placed just because of multiple gestation. I think they are prescribed based on history & obvious need. I think it's great news that you don't seem to need one.
