Can Amnio be done on 1 baby only???

I am still contemplating the Amnio. My Peri says it must be done on both my twins. I am 17w now. I just want to do it on the one they found a soft marker on. Any advice welcome.

Thanks,
Tammy

I went in for a nuchal scan at 13 weeks and one twin had a slightly elevated nuchal fold (2.4). Our doctor advised us to have the amnio not only to find out about tri 21 but also heart defects. (DH has a slight heart condition) We were advised to do so because of the possible effect on the other twin. I am having my amnio on Friday and only having it on one of my little ones. We went in and met with a genetic counselor who advised us to only have it on the twin in question because (we were told) the risk increases if you have it on both. That is just the advice that we were given, I am sure your doctor has your best interest at heart. Although, do whatever makes you feel the most comfortable. If you only want it on one twin, tell them that and I'm sure they'll work with you. I'll let you know what the amnio is like on Friday. Best of luck in your decision

Good luck to you~I'm sorry that you found some soft markers and I'm surprised that the dr wants to amnio both babies-did s/he say why?

I know for fact that medically, you can amnio only one baby. When I was pg with my triplets, one baby had an irregular CVS result (Trisomy 2 mosacism) and we chose to amnio that baby only, since the other two were fine.

However, maybe your dr has a reason for wanting to amnio both babies? Either way, I hope things work out for you.

They can amnio only one if that is what you want. Push it, dont be relaxed, it is your child.

I had my amnio on Friday and it went surprisingly well! I was really scared but it ended up not being that painful or scary. I watched the baby on the monitor the entire time to make sure that he was ok. Both babies are doing great. I had some back pain the next two days but was told that was somewhat normal and not to be worried. We had another consultation before the amnio and it reassured me when the tech said that they do these every day. The nurses and my peri were great. I wouldn't recommend it, but it really wasn't that bad.
