Clomid questions

Hi, I am a 25 year old mother of 2 year old triplets who were conceived through IVF. We are begining to TTC spontanously, however I am not getting my hopes up because it was a hard road conceiving the first time around. We went directly to IVF as a infertility treatment the first time around. My ob/gyn recommended today that we start trying on our own but if no conception in few months he would like to start me on clomid. I love my triplets with all of my heart, but would love to have a singleton pregnancy this last go around of child bearing! My question to you mothers carrying right now is how many of you conceived with the help of clomid? What odds did they give you of the chances of conceiving multiples with the use of clomid? I told my doctor about my hesitations and he told me I would only have a 2% chance of conceiving more than one with clomid but my odds with IVF were low also and now have three beautiful children! I will love any children I conceive, I just really want to know all of the facts before starting treatment. Any replys would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Nette,

I did not have success while on Clomid (which in my opinion is an awful drug!). I am, however, on the board of my local multiples club and we have three mothers who have more than one set of multi's all due to Clomid. Additionally, we have a quad mom who conceived her quads via clomid. I also wanted to add that I have had two sets of twins (only one set surviving), so it is common to be pg w/multis more than once even using IVF.

If you feel that more multiples would be too much for you (or you just desire a singleton pg), I would encourage you to have a heart to heart with your OB prior to starting Clomid. S/he can monitor you via u/s to determine the number of follicles you have and then you could make a decision whether to continue "trying" that month based on what the u/s reveals.

Nette,
I have my triplets in utero because of one round of clomid. I was told that the chances of that happening are like .3% but I have met a TON of moms pg with or have had triplets because of Clomid. Many from TC.
I would totally second Jillies advice and be monitored to see how many follies mature while on Clomid. I had 7 mature, and in hindsight I should have freaked when my OB said to go ahead with the cycle, but I didnt and I am lucky today that only triplets are in there.
Good luck with your TTC journey, I hope you find it easier to concieve this time around.
Tammie

edited to add: Jillies right Clomid is brutal...

Was just browsing and saw your post. I am currently pregnant with one baby (14 weeks) and I used clomid.

Thank you very much for sharing all of your experiences. I guess one of the points that all of your posts proves is any fertility treatment is a gamble. I take the percentages the md's give me very seriously, after all I am the mother of only 2% chance triplets! Its very early on in TTC so hopefully I will have luck spontanously. Thank you all greatly for your replies!

My twins are a result of Clomid and IUI. I was told the chances were only 7-10%. For once I hit the lottery

My trips are the result of 100mg CLomid CD 5-9. I was told 25% chance of conception, 5% chance of twins, less than 1% chance of triplets. I had 2 mature follies, and 2 that where not Quite mature, according to doctor. Well, they must have caugth up in time Fwiw, I had some pretty heavy bleeding, clotting, etc, early on and we were never sure where it came form, but it is possible that there were 4 to begin with....odds certainly don't mean everything and I have definatly learned that less than 1 does not equal ZERO

Thank you for your reply. Because I am the mother of less than 3% triplets (I believe that was the percentage, I've heard so many lately I'm becoming confused!), I take the odds very seriously! I'm just wondering if I even should be entertaining the thought of using fertility drugs again, but this may be my only chance to conceive. I will give it some more time of TTC naturally and we'll see what the future holds for us. THank you so much for your reply and congrats, its such a wonderful blessing!
