My friends son has the chicken pox!

I am pretty sure that N&N have had the vaccination for chicken pox when they turned a year old. My friend has a 19 month old and she called today to tell me he has chicken pox and DID have the vaccination. I find that so strange that he has it.

She wants to get together soon (within the next week). I'm not too sure if I should or not. I heard that can be contagious up to 14 days. I don't even know if my kids could get it or not since they had the shot.

Anyone ever heard of this under the age of 2?

The period of incubation or whatever is 10-14 days after being exposed to the ill person, but I think they have to have fairly new, not scabbed over/healing lesions. The vaccine isn't 100%--supposed to be milder cases though. My friends older ds did not get vaccinated and her younger did, when the oldest caught them, the youngest did not...so theoretically you should be able to see your friend without a high risk, but I know theory and reality are not equal when it comes to parenting.

The vaccine does not necessarily prevent the chicken pox. It lessens the effects of them. They tend to get a very mild case and often times could be just a couple of spots that you think they have bug bites.

As far as how long to stay away, talk to your pedi...I caught them from a friend who had already scabbed over.

I agree with the other ladies...pretty sure I've heard that they can still get it, although the chances are less and if they do get it, it's not supposed to be as bad.

***I edited my previous post because I was in a rush, and my reply didn't make sense***

I don't think I would take the chance. I'm not sure how long the incubation/contagious period is. I would just tell her that you would love to get together at a later date.

I've heard of people going and having "chicken pox parties" and taking their kids so they will all get them and get it over with! No thank you..I think I'll take my chances, and hopefully not ever get them!

Ooh, I'd postpone any playdates with them until you can be sure that all the kids are healthy.

Thank you ladies! I do think I'm going to stay clear for about 2 weeks. My friend wants our families to get together on Monday (labor day) and I told her to let me know how her son is first.

I did actually think of calling the pedi. and asking what they thought. I worry so much for the kids and I honestly don't want them to get it or ME have to deal with them having it...LOL

I think you're smart to steer of him for a little while.

I, too, have heard of chicken pox parties - I think the theory is that it's easier on kids to get them when they're younger; therefore, exposing them early on. It makes sense to me, not that I necessarily agree with it!
