Luke got his 1st 9 weeks report card today and overall he did well. However, I am a little confused. On his midterm report, the teacher had marked satisfactory for reading. At parent/teacher conference, which was in mid-September, she said we needed to work on reads with expression and reads fluently, but also told me she was not worried about it, that she had already seen that Luke was becoming a more confident reader.
On Luke's report card he got a 92 overall grade in reading.
She marked him below grade level for reading and needs improvement in the following areas
Reads with expression
Reads fluently
Uses vocabulary in context
Comprehends what is read
Also, to me if any student is below grade level for reading, they should be receiving extra help with reading. Based on his testing, which is written and verbal, Luke was not chosen for extra help. So I am a bit confused.
Should I email the teacher?

Yes, I would email the teacher and ask her to explain. If he's below grade level, I would expect some extra help to get him up to grade level.

I would ask for a conference and not try to get an explanation in an email.

I agree, ask for a face-to-face conference. 92 is great -- seems like a reading below grade level rating wouldn't be that high. I wouldn't think he would "qualify" for extra help with a 92 but the below grade level contradicts that. I hope she can explain!

The 92 is probably for level of difficulty in the words he is able to read and understand. All of the things listed as needs improvement are outside those specific criterion.
For instance - comprehends what is read. He may understand the facts of what he's reading at the time, but later, when asked questions about broader meaning, he may have difficulty.
Or - reads fluently. He may be able to sound out all of the words he's reading, but may not be able to read a paragraph without stopping several times to decode a word.
Just my guess, and I think talking with the teacher is the best thing to do.Monica

Mrs. H - He is getting a 100 on his weekly reading selection tests and 100 on his other weekly reading assessment that includes them reading a paragraph, answering questions on the paragraph as well as grammer, vocubulary and other questions.
The first few tests he was making 65 or 75, but since then he has made a 94 or higher on thoses tests.Hope

Update - I spoke his teacher on the phone. The 92 is his overall grade on his reading tests they take each week.
The other need improvements area were based on his AIMS testing they did at the beginning of the school year.
Anyway in speaking to her, she realized that she had marked Luke's report card wrong. She apologized profusely and will be correcting his report card when I send it back. He should be marked on grade level and satisfactory.Hope
