I know that I'm an older parent and I've thankfully never smoked and never been tolerant of smoking so maybe I'm being a little hard nosed on this but a mom showed up at he bus stop smoking a cigarette. It really bothered me. I think that it's a terrible example(not that every move I make is a great example) and the bus stop is not in front of her house. If it were in front of my house I'd say something if anything was left in the grass or on the sidewalk but really can you not smoke for the 5-10 minutes that you're waiting for the bus? What is your plan for the ashes and butt?

That would really bother me too. I think it's disrespectful to smoke at a kids bus stop.

I agree with Robbie...I just think it's disrespectful.
Smoking has been a huge topic of conversation lately around here as the new nursing home I'm working for is a 100% tobacco free facility. NONE, NADA, NOTHING!! Not even these poor old Vets (it's a VA nursing home) who've smoked their entire lives can smoke! Aye! It's gonna get nasty around there when we start accepting residents! They have to be smoke free for at least a month before they can move in. Smoking's not allowed by staff out in their own cars in the parking lot and no leaving on breaktime (b/c technically they're on the clock) except lunchtime. That's it!

That would totally bother me. It bothers me when people even smoke at a beach...I always smell it and butts are disgusting in the sand.
Thankfully at the lake near my house, there is no smoking allowed...but after hours people do and I always go up them and tell them that is is still now allowed.Robyne

MY place of business is becoming smoke free for employees, but patients can still smoke. We don't get it. If they are going to say they are smoke free campus, then patients and visitors shouldn't be allowed to smoke

The Cleveland Clinic is heading that way now. There are a few spots on their land (and they own a lot of land in Cleveland) where employees can smoke. But starting really soon, they will ban it on their property all together. Lets just say that the current head honcho would not hire smokers, fat people, old people, young people or anyone he thought was a bad image for the Clinic. Pretty much a moron and he's said those things on TV too. His lawyer looked like he was about to faint that day too.
As for smoking while waiting for the school bus, come on, you can deal with not smoking for 5 minutes.
Thank goodness, I'm the only parent who waits all 5 days at Ben's bus. There are currently 3 who get off. The other two, I know their mom and she's got classes some days at the college so she not there every day.

It's a good learning experience. We don't really know anyone who smokes. The other day, as we were getting things into the car at the grocery store, there was a guy leaning on his car smoking. I started talking about how bad it smelled. The kids joined in, 'Yeah, it can make you sick, too". I used those situations as a learning experience and if it makes the smoker feel bad, so be it.

I try to be careful about saying anything infront of smokers as my Mom is a smoker and yes, I do use those situations (and many others) as learning experiences for Ben since he is the one that right now it picking up on some of the issues.
Obese
Amish (yes, we've had to talk about that one, as he noticed that they dressed differently from everyone else at the rest stop we were at.)
Black
Hispanic
smokers
drinkers
smelly people
Jewish (there is a large Jewish population in Cleveland and we see them normally when we go to the Zoo)
To name a few of the things that he has noticed and we had to talk about out of ear shot of the people as I didn't want to upset anyone. I explain to the best of my ablility about why they are that way.
