What would you do re: well-check visit?

Our pediatrician, who I absolutely love, is nearing retirement and only works in the mornings M-Th. His last well-check appt is at either 10 or 10:15. C2 is due for his well-check and is in AM kindergarten which gets out at 11:30. Should I take C out of school to see him, see another dr some afternoon, or see if we can get an appt sometime during Christmas break?

I see no reason why you can't take him out of school for one doctor's appt - unless of course he's going for perfect attendance!

But if you are planning on getting a new doctor soon anyway (since your ped is retiring) you could go ahead and find one that would see him in the afternoon.

Christmas break is a good plan too...if you want to do doctor appts then.

I take him out of school. Luke has had some appts that I could only get times while he was in school. With a note from the doctor, it gets excused as an early out and doesn't count against him.

As a policy, I don't take my girls out of school for appointments. I always make them after school. But, plenty of moms do take their kids out of school for appointments. Since your ped is retiring, I would assume he'll continue to cut back so it's going to continue to be an issue. Personally, I'd go ahead and pick a new ped. Not so much a "problem" to miss school in the early years but I do eel like as they move up in school, it's harder for them to miss.

Thanks ladies It's very frustrating- around here, you really can't get many appointments after school- they're not out until 3:40 and it seems like most check-ups/non-sick visits only happen until about 3:00. I am taking the boys for their next dental appt at 7:30 am- not sure how that'll work, but I figured it was worth a try to avoid having to take them out yet again.

Susan, my ped doesn't do well check ups after 2:00. She does them from 8-9 and 1-2 every day.

I am having to take K out for some of her appointments due to scheduling conflicts. If I don't then it would take me about 4 months to get her in and for these specialists 4 months is just way too long to wait. Our school has done away with the perfect attendance awards this year due to the H1N1 as they want the sick kids to stay home and get better instead of spreading the lovely germs around! I think it would be great to perhaps see another doc to see if they are someone you will transfer into when your peds does retire. Maybe you can start the transition now? I am lucky as for our peds...she is pretty good with getting an after school appointment unless it is the month of August because she is overwhelmed with school physicals. Well check visits are fine if pushed a little longer which I have had to do since K's bday is in August the busiest month for our peds...wasn't a big deal going in September.

My ped only does well visits in the morning too. I see both sides of the issue....want the healthier kids in the a.m. before the sick kids slobber and sneeze on everything. But then otht...aren't the sick kids already missing school? Why make the healthy kids stay home from school? I say get the sick kids in the a.m. then spray everything down and start with healthy after lunch. J's yearly visit would be in March and I don't want him thinking it's ok to pull him out of school so I just waited until June.

I say wait until Christmas or even better...just find a new one now.

Hey, it's Kindergarten, how much can he miss in a half a day? I'd pull him out and see your current Ped.

I'd probably go ahead and try to find another pediatrician, since you're going to have to soon anyway. Hopefully you can find one who takes afternoon appts.
