One very confused girl! Please help!

Hey everyone! I just went to the doctor yesterday and explained to him that I thought I had PCOS. His response was, “Yes, you do Megan.” Before I had this conversation with him he never even mentioned PCOS to me! After he told me that I did indeed have PCOS, he did not tell me anything else...he simply handed me my script and sent me on my way. While I am not new to TTC, I have very limited knowledge about PCOS. I have read online that I defiantly need to stay away from sugars, but how much is too much? I have also read mixed reviews about eating bread. Also, I am currently taking Clomid & my doctor refuses to put me on anything else until he gets me up to 200 mg ( I am on 150 currently) but I have seen a lot of women posting about Metformin. Should I be taking it? ANY information y'all could give me about PCOS in general would be greatly appreciated! I am so confused about everything! This is all very overwhelming! Wishing baby dust to all of you!

    Hi Megan,

I am sorry you are in this boat. I think your doctor means well, but you should request testing for insulin resistance (the reason online articles say to stay away from sugar or bread). Just because you have PCOS, does not mean you will test positive for IR (I did not test positive). You should also consider having your partner's fertility tested as well, if it hasn't been already. There isn't a good reason to keep you taking Clomid at increasing doses if, in fact, there is also a male factor.

I usually encourage people to see the reproductive endocrinologist (RE) even when cycling with Clomid. With the RE, you will be monitored more closely and the doctor will be able to work with you from start to finish to find a protocol that works best for you. They will also test for thyroid issues, which are often undiagnosed until TTC.

Let me know if you would like to connect with a RE in your area. That is part of my job here...and I would like to see you working with a doctor who specializes in PCOS or any of your other concerns. You can PM me or email me at kim@fertilityauthority.com

Feel free to ask any questions being that we have a common diagnosis.

    Best of luck to you!!!

    Kim

I am sorry that you are going through this. I took 3 cycles of Clomid with no results. Then we took 3 cycles off with me taking Metformin a 1500 mg dose. Now I am back on Clomid and just had my day 12 US and they found 2 follicles on the left and 1 on the right. We are praying that this cycle works. Wishing Babydust on you. I would talk to your doctor about blood tests and having your hubby tested as well.

Megan - Sorry to hear you are having trouble TTC. I agree that you should see an RE. My gyn had me on Metformin and my RE kept me on it. I've been on it for at least 2 years. It really helped me regulate my cycle. I have just started IVF. Suddenly, my RE decided to take me off the Metformin b/c some new research indicates it can diminish egg quality, apparently. I've never heard that before so I have no idea how solid the research is. I had always been told that the Metformin can help PCOS patients make it through the first trimester, so I'm a bit conflicted about being off of it. Good luck in your journey!

sorry to hear this megan, I was immediatly started on metformin and did 3 cycles of clomid with no luck of any follicles, before my obgyn sent me to a RE who is jumping to femara and menopur. Also I agree with getting ur husband tested. My husband has 3 kids for another marriage and he has some issues with morphology. I wish you the best of luck!
