Hello ladies!
I hope your able to help.
Im currently 11wk 5dy with a singleton. I've been on Met since July 09.
I also had GD with my twin pregnancy. Now im wondering If its ok to stay on it while pregnant? I know a few ladies do and some don't depending on the Docs/practice. I've read it helps ward off GD, and helps with Lactation towards end of pregnancy.
My docs told me to stop it. Just cold turkey? I would think weening off of it would be better for the body. I stopped it last night, but part of me feels i should stay on it!
Can anyone help? I don't see my MFM again until my cerclage surgery April 16.

preg/child ment.
Hey there T!! With Ava and Ethan I took it as my RE suggested up until 13 weeks. He wanted to have me stop it cold turkey as well. I kinda took things into my own hands and weened myself off of it. Total weening process took 2 weeks so I guess you could say that I was on the Met. until around 15 weeks. I just felt better weening rather than stopping it abruptly but many many women do as the Dr. tells them to and stop cold turkey with no issues!!

@BC-MiracleTwins - When I was pg w/DS no one told me to stop. Towards the end of my 1st trimester, though, I asked the question and received a resounding "Stop taking." I still ended up w/GD at ~20 weeks, but I may have staved it off because of the Met.

For my first pg, in 2005, I was on 1500 met for the first trimester, then told to stop cold turkey. I had borderline failed the 1hr GTT but passed the 3hr GTT. This was a singleton pg, and I gained so much weight that I quit weighing myself. I'm thinking I gained 55+ lbs.
For my second pg, in 2008, my RE told me I should stay on 1000 met for the whole pg. He said more recent studies showed this was a good strategy. This made such a positive difference for the whole pregnancy. This was a twin pg, and I only gained maybe 40-45 lbs total, and I passed my 1hr GTT just fine. All my weight was in my tummy, and my legs and arms were regular to thin size vs my first pg where my arms and legs were sausages. This was the complete opposite of what my first pg was like, without the met.
I stayed on the met during breastfeeding my twins, and that was better than not being on it. When I quit bfeeding and was able to get back on 2000 met (same as my TTC dosage), my body was significantly happier.

My RE told me to stop taking it around 7.5 weeks. I took it upon myself to wean myself off, so ended up taking it until around 9.5 weeks. Was nervous to stop taking it, but all is ok so far (fingers crossed!)

Metformin during pregnancy
I just had twin boys in December, and took metformin 1000mg twice a day all throughout my pregnancy, which I guess is unusual in the US, but it was a decision I made with my OBGYN. I was labelled a gestational diabetic because I took it, but technically wasn't, but it was kinda nice as I didn't have to do any of the glucose tolerance testing. I did have a blood sugar testing machine and had to watch that, but my levels were fine, and I never had to go on insulin. Metformin doesn't hurt your babies if you stay on it throughout your pregnancy. I felt better that I was taking it because of the higher miscarriage rate with PCOS.
