metformin alone, will it help?

hi everyone,

i have been on this forum off and on for the last 5yrs or so. and for the last 2yrs + my dh and i have been ttc #3 and have done everything this time around except ivf (which we cannot afford)
my question is: has anyone or is anyone taking just metformin? and will that alone fix irregular periods and make you ovulate on your own?
this is something i have never been on and i am curious and trying to find more info on taking just metformin to help w/pcos. i have done clomid, femara, injectables, iui's... after stopping the "medical" route in june i have been getting longer cycles(50cd) and i dont think i have "o'd" since the meds... so i was thinkin bout having the dr put me on metformin and see if that would at least regulate me...?
comments? opinions....anything would be great and thanks so much!!

For some ladies Met is all they need to get back on track.
AFm that was not the case I have been on and off it for 5 yrs. I tried Avandia no luck. I have done all the treatments you have tired as well. I have been PG but m/c. I am still ttc#1 I been trying for so long. I am currently taking 1500mg of Metiformin and low-carb diet and excersice. I have lost 35lbs since march of 09. I need to get agressive on the weight loss again and loss more before we return to the RE for treatment.
Wishing truck loads of babydust good luck

For some women yes. I am currently on metformin and clomid, which is also supposed to be a helpful combination. Good luck to you.

thank you both for your posts. i guess im looking to stay away from the fertility drugs and thought if met could least get my cycle on "track" that would be a plus. i guess i should research it a bit and then bring it up to the doctors. the thing is the "only" symptom of pcos i have is irregular periods, so maybe the met wouldnt even help me, i dunno?

if anyone had any other thoughts im open to comments, thanks so much

good luck to you all!!

I started taking Met awhile back. It didn't entirely regulate my cycles but it did push me to ovulate. I had a surprise pregnancy that recently ended in a m/c. When I go back to the Dr, I'm going to ask about Clomid to see if it can get my cycle down to a more normal number so we can start trying again.

Didn't work for me...BUT I had Provera every 28 days for a period so maybe if I had let it run its course it could have worked!
