metformin ****

okay ladies, I hope your experience can help me out.

(TMI warning) I start 500mg of Met on friday. Friday and Saturday, no problems. Today, very different story. We are on hour 9 of intense bloating, gas, and now diarrhea. I feel beyond awful and do not know how to stop it. No position, walking, etc takes the pain away. Any suggestions?

Also, we were traveling today, 6 hour car ride, and because of random circumstances I ended up eating mostly carbs and almost no protein. Could that be why today is different? I always eat carbs, but not ALL carbs.

I know I can search the threads, but do not have the energy/strength right now. I have no idea how I am going to get through work tomorrow!

Any words of wisdom?

Smiles,

I'm on 1500mg of Metformin and I find that what I eat definitely affects how I feel. For the most part I'm fine but some times it just hits me (usually if I've had too much sugar or fat, or hot chocolate for some reason...) For me it usually goes away after I've used the washroom (TMI!). So I don't really have any tips for you I guess, other than know that you're not alone! And lay on your tummy and get someone to rub your back! Hope you feel better soon.

UGH, I feel your pain. I find that a ton of carbs does the same thing to me. I have never really had it last more then a few hours though. When are u taking the met? In the morning?? Evening?? I try to take mine as i am eating bfast and right after dinner. The timing sometimes helps. Also, the longer i am on it, the better. When i was ttc#2 (ended up being #2 and #3) i was on it and then was off until recently and i remember it getting better as time went on. to you and i hope you feel better!

Thanks! I will try laying on my stomach, I had not thought of that. DH went to the store and stocked up on low carb/no grease yummys.

I am now concerned b/c I have developed a fever, that keeps going up and can't get warm. According to the info from the pharmacy these are all danger signs, and I am only on 1 pill (which I take with breakfast.) Also, dehydration is a major concern now. It can not be good to loose this much water. I am in the bathroom at least once an hour (and i took Imodium)

off to drink some ginger ale.

Thank you for the support! It does help to know you aren't alone.

Did you call the doctor??? That doesn't sound very normal to me. Get some popsicles, that will help you get in some more fluids.

That happened to me on Met. even if I didn't eat a lot of carbs/sugar/fat. The only thing that helped me was when my Dr. switched me to the controlled release version of Met. Are you on that one already? If not and this continues I would suggest talking to your Dr. about switching you to it. I hope you feel better soon

Actually, I did call the dr at 2am b/c DH was going to take me to the emergency room. I woke with a high fever and very very weak, had to have DH walk me to and from the bathroom. Dr is pretty sure I had Met side-effects and the beginning of the flu. (Surprise, surprise, I am an elementary teacher.) They just happen to come on the same day. he did say no more Met until I am over the flu.

I am so sorry to hear of your adventure. How are you feeling now? I find that if I take my met at lunch and 2 at dinner of the 500 mg I do better. If I am not eating much, then I wont take my pill sometimes. Usually my dinner is the heaviest meal, so I think that helps balance me out.

Thanks.

Doing better. I have found there are certain foods I need to stay away from, and then am okay. I take the extended release, so I think that really helps. Saturday I move up to 1500mg!
