Anyone here with Type I diabetes and PCOS
What is the treatment for PCOS for someone who is a type I diabetic and not insulin resistant? My friend has been diagnosed with PCOS but is not under any treatment. She has attempted to get pregnant via IUI and has had 6 to 8 failed attempts. She now wants to move onto IVF and is waiting for her Provera induced cycle to begin. Her medical history is extensive and includes the above -mentioned issues, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and rheumatoid arthritis. Her antibody testing was done a couple of years ago but she is not aware of her results. Should she be on treatment for PCOS? She has been through so much and wants a baby so badly. Any advice?

Hi!
I do not know much about her medical issues. I would think that her Drs should be ontop of that to make sure that everything is compatable with getting pregnant. Is she on any diabetes medications? For me, Metformin brought my cycles and ovulation back. I will also have to take metformin for the first trimester to reduce a m/c. I wish her the best of luck! |

I agree with Ferret, if she isn't on any diabetes medications she should ask her Dr. about being put on Metformin or a medication like it. Did she have blood work done to confirm PCOS? If not, why do they think she has it? I don't know a lot about the other medical conditions she has. So sorry she is going through this. So, is she getting ready for her first IVF cycle now? Keep us updated!

Thank you both for your responses. She is on insulin for the Type 1 diabetes. Her doctor is in very busy practice and we all know sometimes doctors can possibly miss things. I just wanted to compare notes with someone who has both Type 1 and PCOS to see what treatment regimen they follow.
She has known since her teens that something was not quite right. She has been diagnosed with PCOS and at one point had a cyst removed from one of her ovaries. She has never had a regular cycle on her own without being on birth control pills or Provera. She is 39 now. Yes, she is pursuing IVF now. Her cycle started yesterday and she starts stimming tonight. I want this so badly for her. She has been through so much heartache already. Thanks again, ladies, for your responses. Please keep your fingers crossed for her. :-) |
