Other options besides metformin?

I was diagnosed with PCOS back in 1999. At first I was put on regular (non time released) metformin and it made me so sick that I was almost put in the hospital. My dr. switched me to Avandia which I did great with and had NO side effects. I even ended up getting pregnant on that alone. After DS was born and we stopped breast feeding, I tried to go back on the Avandia. This time, I had a major side effect of swelling and the dr. pulled me off it immediately and put me on met ER. So, I've been on Met ER since late 2002. I have never gotten over the side effects. I got up to 2000 mgs and did okay for a while (side effects were there, but no out of control), but then the morning diareah got worse and worse and at times I would vomit from it so I dropped to 1500 mgs. I did okay for a long time, but the side effects started getting way worse again, so I'm only taking 1000 mgs a day now.

What other kinds of meds are you guys taking? I am not looking to get pregnant, but I need to control my IR. I don't go back to a dr. until January and I can no longer see the endocrinologist so I need to work with the nurse practicioner that I will end up with in Jan. I want to go in with info about my other options.

thanks,
jennifer

I am on Metformin and initially I had the side effects but after about a week and a half, they were gone. When are you taking the pills? What time a day? I cannot take mine with food, it has to be an hour or two after I eat. If I take the meds with food, I end up with an upset stomach. I take one pill in the afternoon after lunch and another after dinner.

I take my pills with dinner. Over the years, I have tried with food, without food, with milk, without milk, low carb, low fat, etc and nothing changes. If I don't take it with food or at least milk, I get very nauseous and sometimes vomit.
