Question letrozol,metformin,pcos

After getting off the pill in December and not getting a period, I thought it was because I exercise/run a lot or it just took awhile to get the pill out of my system. I took progesterone to see if I got my period and I did. However, I didn't get it the next month and didn't get pregnant. Finally discovered that I have PCOS. When I read about who gets PCOS, I couldn't understand how I had it because I didn't have any of the characteristics- overweight, hair growth, diabetes etc. My doctor said that thin women can get it. I guess my insulin levels may be high as well. Last week, I had an ultrasound done and there were a ton of cysts on my ovaries. My doctor decided to put me on metformin for at least two months. Great, I have to wait another two months. I tried acupuncture for a few months and then the chiropractor (heard that being out of line can affect your reproductive system)...now I have to do this for a few months. I am getting way too impatient. Just wanted to see if there is anyone who has PCOS and started taking metformin. How long do you have to take it to ovulate again? Could I possibly get pregnant within these two months? He also suggested that after two months, I take letrozole. Has anyone taken that and had success?

Hi Merega,

I don't have the typical signs of PCOS either, just the cysts and the ovulation issues. I'm on Metformin as well, for the last 3.5 weeks. As far as I know, Metformin doesn't necessarily make you ovulate...but it could. I think you could definitely get pregnant during the next few months, there are many stories on here of women with PCOS getting pregnant even naturally. So best of luck and don't give up hope!

pg ment!

As far as Metformin goes in my personal experience with it taking 1500 mg a day it never made me ovulate. I required taking Clomid or Femara (Femara is the brand name for Letrozole) along with the Metformin to make me ovulate. I took Clomid for 12 months (and ovulated every month on it) got pregnant once and had that pregnancy end in a miscarriage. After that I was DONE with Clomid so I went to see an RE instead of my regular OB. My RE put me on Femara (Letrozole). The third month on Femara (Letrozole) I got pregnant and now have 2 year old twins from that cycle.

If you aren't seeing an RE I would suggest finding one right away as opposed to an OB/GYN. OB's are there to help after you get pregnant while an RE's sole purpose is to get you pregnant. Also, have they checked your Testosterone levels? Elevated Testosterone is something they go by to confirm PCOS as a diagnosis. Are you using OPK's to check for ovulation?

Getting on Metformin is a step in the right direction. Don't be discouraged if it doesn't make you ovulate though as there are many medications that you can try. I know how hard the waiting is. I wouldn't wish IF on anyone. Though I hate you have to be here I wanted to welcome you. We would love to have you join us on the weekly updates thread!!
