I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 14, I am now 20. My insulin level is the only thing that sky rocketed on my blood test, so I was prescribed Metformin 3x daily. My fiance and I are hoping to start a family soon once I recover from ectopic pregnancy surgery for the removal of my right tube. When trying to become pregnant, should Metformin be taken while trying, during etc? What are the possible side effects, etc? Thank you.

My RE had me continue to take metformin while going through the infertility treatment and then continue it through the first trimester. My little guy was born perfectly healthy.
Good luck! Dawn |

pg ment
I have had 2 fresh cycles and 2 FET's. The only successful pg/birthwas from the last FET where I lost 30 lbs prior and was taken metformin ER 2xday for a total daily dose of 1500-2000 mg.
I took the metformin up through my entire 1st Trimester. With the previous cycles I was not on metformin. I tried initially but had trouble so I stopped. I realized what needed to change and made those changes while hoping for better outcomes. Plus, it all came together at the same time-the weight loss, eating my meal then taking my metformin-I tolerated it better that way-and taking the metformin the entire 1st Trimester. I think all of that gave me a layer of protection that I didn't have before. Wishing you success too. Kspeed |

preg. ment.
Welcome Jessica - I was on Metformin all during ttc. My RE had me stay on the Metformin for the first trimester. There were no side effects of me staying on the med while pregnant.

I've been hearing a lot lately about Metformin and the wonders this drug seems to do for so many people. I've had 2 m/c this year and am overweight, but my insulin is "borderline", so I didn't take Metformin. I'm wondering if this is something that would prevent me from miscarrying again???

Noazmom,
I'm so sorry to hear about your m/c's. I have been battling PCOS for a long time and I am convinced that metformin helped me with my success in 2006. I had several scares during my pg that I think that (for me) could have been catastrophic had I not lost the weight prior to my FET cycle. The weight loss was also due to the metformin. I'm back on it now, doing better with my eating habits and ttrying to be consistent with working out so I can do FET 1-2 more times if my embies make the thaw. I'm losing weight even without working out as much. Once you get past the side effects of the metformn and take it with food and get the Extended Release tabs things go really well. I hope it works out for you. Metformin ER has been a wonder drug for me. I think it's helping to keep DM at bay for me too. Take Care, Kspeed |

Noazmom - Welcome!!
My personal opinion on Metformin is that it is a wonderful medication. In some people it aids in helping them lose weight and yes, has been know to reduce the chances of miscarriages. I am very sorry to hear that you have to know what a miscarriage is like. I would talk to your Dr. about putting you on it, it certainly won't hurt to try. My first month or so on it I had terrible stomach issues. Then I switched to the Metformin Extended Release and that seemed to be much easier for my stomach to handle. Let us know if you talk to your Dr. about it and what he/she says! |
