follicle size ?

Hello, I was on this board over a year ago when I was trying to conceive while taking clomid. All of my previous clomid cycles were supposedly a bust. Basically, I was on clomid CD 9-5 and they would check me by ultrasound only to find that my ovaries weren't being stimulated at all by the clomid. Now, what I have a problem understanding is, while I was on clomid, I had a period on CD 32 every month. Before I would have to take Provera to start my cycle. So, that led me to believe that I was either ovulating late or the clomid raised my hormone level just enough to make me have some sort of withdraw bleed. After a break, I decided to try clomid once again. This time I asked my doctor to try the CD 3-7 to see if that would shorten my cycle. Today is cycle day 11 and I went to have an ultrasound to check my follicle growth. I found out that there are no significant follicles on the left ovary, but on the right ovary there is a 8mm follicle. The lady who did my ultrasound said that she was not happy and would consider this cycle a bust since there were no 20 mm follicles. My question is, if I do ovulate late, is there a possibility that my follicles just started growing? My doctor said that on a 3-7 day cycle the average ovulation day is CD 14 and that the follicles are just not big enough at this point to do anything. Has anyone ever had their follicles not be big enough but then go on to have a later ovulation? Any experiences appreciated. Thank you! Avery

If you do ovulate late in your cycle that will affect your follicle size. One who ovulates later in their cycle (like I always have) won't have good sized follies on CD 14 like a 'normal' women would. Their big follies would show up later in their cycle and they would then in turn ovulate later in their cycle. Hope that made some sort of sense. Did you have another u/s yet? Are you using OPK's to see if and when you ovulate?

Hi, Thanks for responding. I'm going in for another ultrasound tomorrow just for my peice of mind. My doctor told me that since my follicle was only 8 mm on CD 11 that there was in no way I would be ovulating this month. I am going to wait and see what the ultrasound shows tomorrow to determine if I will get an OPK. If it shows that my follicle hasn't grown (which is what my doctor thinks will happen) than I will just wait for next cycle and hope for the best. The doctor said he will put me on 150mg of clomid. I just have a hard time understanding how he doesnt think I am ovulating when I started my period 3 months in a row on clomid. They were all longer cycles (32 days), but for me, that's great! I will let you know what I find out tomorrow. Thanks again! Avery

Well, unfortunately the doctor was right this time. The 8mm follicle that I had on Friday had shrunk down to 5mm. Next month, I'm going to try the 150mg of clomid and then if that doesn't work, I have read on here a lot of other things to try and my doctor seems willing to give them a shot. My doctor also mentioned trying follistim. I need to contact my insurance company to see if they would cover anything like that (probably not). But I'll keep you posted on the next cycle! Thanks, Avery
