PCOS and miscarriage risk?
Hi all, i recently got diagnosed with PCOS. I have had one miscarriage last year and been trying since then. the RE who diagnosed me with PCOS has me on clomid now and doing an IUI. WHen i asked him about PCOS and risk of miscarriage, he said thats not really a proven link...im terrified of having another miscarriage. Anyone else know anything different? He is at Cornell in NYC and is considered excellent.
thanks

Preg Ment.
Welcome
Sorry you have to be here but I think you will find a lot of great information here as well as friends that all know what you are going through.Every RE and every OB that I have dealt with in my ttc journey has said they believe there is a higher risk of m/c when dealing with PCOS. I did 12 cycles of Clomid. Got pregnant on my 12th cycle only to m/c. My RE then put me on Femara (taken exactly like Clomid) and on my 3rd cycle of Femara I got pregnant and now have 22 month old twins to show for it. One medication that Drs. put those of us with PCOS on is Metformin. Metformin has been known to help decrease the chance of m/c's in women with PCOS. Please feel free to join us on the weekly updates threads. Also, for any abbreviations that you may not be familiar with at the top of the page there is a 'Acronyms'. If you click on that it will give you a list of all the abbreviations and what they stand for! |

Hi BC-littleabige, thanks so much for your response...im seeing my RE again on monday for monitoring and thinking of asking him about metformin. He had said if my bloodwork shows insulin resistance, he will use that drug but then since i am not insulin resistant, he never brought it up again...
so while you were pregnant with your twins (congrats btw-how lovely!), did you take metforming through the first trimester? anything else u did special to prevent miscarriage? |

Yes, my RE had me take the metformin through 13 weeks. I was scared to come off of it so I kind of took it upon myself to wean off of it rather than cold turkey stop it. I took two weeks to wean myself from the metformin so by the time I was off of it completely I was 15 weeks along. The only other thing I did was cut off sex all together. Of course my RE said that wasn't necessary but it eased my mind a little to not so I didn't.
When is your IUI schedule for? |

My story sounds a bit similiar to yours. A year ago this past January, I got pregnant on my own and then miscarried. After trying for quite some time again and switching to a different ob, I was referred to an RE. She told me that women with PCOS are at a higher risk of miscariage, but they aren't exactly sure why. She started me on metformin right away, and then I took that while we were going through the IF treatments (clomid is what we used), and then once I got pregnant she had me stay on the metformin during the first trimester. At 10 weeks she said I could go off of it, but I stayed on it until 12 weeks, and then weaned myself off, so I was on it until about 14 weeks. So far everything has been fine, although my blood pressure has been a bit high from time to time. I passed my gestational diabetes test without any problems. Now I'm just in the final weeks of waiting until my little guy arrives.
Good luck! Dawn |

Hi Dawn, thanks so much for your response..your story gives me hope because it does sound similar
![]() altho my RE didnt think i needed metformin cuz i dont have the insulin resistance condition of PCOS, he said it wont harm me so prescribed it since i asked him about it...given all you ladies who have had successful first trimesters with the drug, i am hopeful now... btw, just came back from IUI excited...good luck with the delivery!! All the best |

With my ob, I did a round of 50mg of clomid, and didn't even ovulate. That is when he sent me to the RE. With her, I started on the metformin at my first appointment (I don't have insulin resistance either), and then once I got my period (we used provera to bring it on), I did a round of 100mg of clomid, and that did the trick. So 2 rounds. I never did get a positive on the opk monitors which is common for women with PCOS, so I was monitored by ultrasounds/bloodwork.
I will warn you the metformin can give you some stomach issues for the first week or so, but just stick with it, because those side effects go away. Good luck!! Dawn |

oh wow, that sounds awesome..i hope my process is simple too (im thinking 3 rounds of clomid/IUIs and then take it from there)...
how do u know you never ovulated with 50 mg? were you being monitored on u/s then? i have been monitored and given an HCG shot but my DH asked me last night "can they be sure your follicles were released?" and i was like "hmmm, i have no idea"...and of course one other thing to worry about
