PCOS & Clomid
Hey, as if you couldn't already tell, I'm a newbie on this site
I'm already liking this place. There's so many places I can read thing at and it's nice to know that there are women out there going through the same thing.Lemme give you a little bit of a back-history before I go into what is going on now... I unexpectedly conceived my son in Jan of 2004 without evening trying. I wasn't really wanting to get pregnant, but he came along anyway. He's the love of my life and I am so happy he's here He's my little monkey.I gained a lot of weight with Brandon. I was 175 (which was healthy for my height and frame) pre-pregnancy. After birth I was 280. I had a C-Section on top of that! My lower belly still hasn't gone down and I can't even do machine crunches with anything over 15 pounds! I have no muscle strength left down there. Which majorly sucks. Anyways, my periods became irregular after him. I thought it was because of the pregnancy and didn't ever get it checked out. In 2006, I finally had my period consecutively for 3 months, and then I got pregnant with #2. My dream ended August 29th 2006, when I miscarried in my bathtub at 4am. The miscarriage caused me to have to pay close attention to any injury I might get because I was 2 points away from a blood-transfusion. I lost so much blood that day... After negativity from my family, and nobody but my grandmother (who had a miscarriage too) really understanding what I was going through: I kind of just stopped caring about myself. Jon (my husband) and I kept trying for another baby, and in 2007, I finally lost enough weight to get my period consecutively for many months in a row. We tried and tried and nothing. January 2008, I thought I might be pregnant. I didn't get my period then or anytime after that. I had several ultrasounds between March and May 2008 to try and confirm the "pregnancy" I thought I had. (I had 3 positive tests!) I went to the hospital when I started spotting in May and after 3 ultrasounds, they told me there is no baby. Well, surprise surprise! LOL Nobody could tell me WHY that was. I went to a gyno at the end of the year to see about figuring out what was wrong. After a lot of tests and ultrasounds, etc, she said I might have PCOS. She then told me I had to go and get surgery to lose weight and she was going to put me on BCP in order to get my period back. I was fuming. I told any doctor I saw that I WANT babies, I do NOT want to be put on BCP. Anyways, she gave me Provera 10mg in Sept 2008 and Oct 2008 to get my period. I got it both times. After that, I stopped going to her because of the way she was treating me and started researching a fertility specialist in my area. I found one and was so excited! I scheduled an appointment, sent in all my tests and paperwork from the other docs and after a few more tests he diagnosed me officially with a mild form of PCOS. Not because I was overweight, but because my testosterone level is slightly elevated (not enough to cause my lack of period, but enough to show that it's PCOS) and I had a few tiny cysts on my left ovary - Not to mention my FSH levels were really low. I have had blood work done many times! My total cholesterol level is 105. My blood sugar level is 91. My BP is 120/70 or 120/80 (depends on the day). I don't have the facial hair, the loss of head hair, the acne, the diabetes...none of that. He gave me the Green on TTC. I was put on Prometrium 100mg and had NO reaction to it (besides extreme nausea and fatigue). No AF. Doctor was going to prescribe 200mg, but remembered that I had a reaction to Provera in 2008 so he put me on Provera 10mg. If I didn't get my period from that or the 20mg, he was going to have to look at my uterus to make sure there wasn't a bigger issue. Well, April 29, 2009....I got my AF! 6 months without a period and I finally got it. He also gave me a script for Clomid 50mg. Today is CD5 (I have to take it 5 - 9) and I'm nervous! I don't know if it's going to work and I really REALLY want it to. I know there are some success stories out there about women who conceived on Clomid. I don't want to get my hopes up if it doesn't work, but then again, I don't want to be totally disappointed... I'm also afraid of the mood swings and side-effects of Clomid. My DH is more afraid of the possibility of twins than anything lol... According to my prior history of being able to catch pregnant and the medication, do you believe I have a good chance? Is there any advice, tips, or cautions you guys can give me? Any experiences with Clomid 50mg? Thanks so much Baby Dust **

First welcome to the board!
*pregnancy mention* I was diagnosed with PCOS when I started seeing a fertility specialist last fall after I had a miscarriage 7 months prior. Since I had gotten pregnant once on my own, I thought I could do it again, but after months of not even getting my period, much less getting pregnant I was getting very frustrated. My periods have always been irregular, but I'm not overweight, don't have the acne, facial hair, etc that many PCOS women have. My diagnosis was confirmed thorugh ultrasound and blood work. I tried clomid 50mg, and didn't have any luck. I didn't even ovulate. So then the next cycle went up to 100mg, and that worked for me. I was also taking metformin that cycle. I'm currently 29 weeks along. As for the mood swings on clomid, I did have some, but my husband now says those mood swings prepared him for my pregnancy mood swings. lol Most of my mood swings were on the days I was taking the clomid. Once I wasn't taking it, then the mood swings went away (or at least until the pregnancy hormones kicked in). This board has been a WONDERFUL place for support during my journey. Everyone here is so helpful and supportive. Good luck with your journey, and feel free to ask questions or just vent when needed! Dawn |

Thank you so much for your reply! I'm happy that you're pregnant. It's refreshing and reassuring!
lol Yea, pregnancy mood swings are horrible. Weepy one moment, crabby the next, happy as pie another... I'm definitely looking forward to reading more replies

pregnancy mentioned
I was on 1500mg of Metformin and 50mg of Clomid with a first cycle success. I am currently 36 weeks pregnant with a boy. My Dh was worried about twins as well but it's really a risk with any cycle especially medicated cycles. The only symptoms from the medication I had was stomach issues from the metformin and hot flashes and hair loss from the Clomid. I didn't lose a lot of hair but it definitely got thinner. I was hoping it would thicken back up with the pregnancy but it didn't. The plus side is it doesn't take as long to straighten it as it used to lol. Besides that I never really had mood swings or anything, but I've been pretty lucky with that throughout the pregnancy as well. I've never been one to have mood swings during PMS so I'm probably not the best judge on that one. Keep us updated on how your cycle is going. |

I am TTC #2 after being on MET for a month. DS is 2 years and it took 2 years to be blessed with him. We did 6 months of clomid up to 150 mg I believe. I was not being treated for PCOS due to my DRs saying that they can not DX PCOS due to the length of time I was on BCPs.
Good Luck to you!! |

[[[pg ment]]]
I finally got it. I wrote it as an update, but I did get a BFP this cycle.
I was totally NOT expecting that, and after alllll the research I did trying to figure out how long it'd take, what to do, how Clomid works, charting, temping, etc.... It was just like....bam. I was in SHOCK when I took the digital. I heard all these stories about women using Clomid and after 3 months or moving up to 100mg they would ovulate and get preggo, but barely any about 1 month on 50mg... I'm still in shock and not really sure I believe it yet. I get my blood results this week....so I'll update on that when I can. Thank you for your reply
