Other drugs to take besides Metformin

I cannot tolerate metformin, I have tried smaller doses to work up to a bigger dose, but it still kills my stomach. So is anybody else tried anything besides Metformin/glucophage?

Have you tried the extended release version? Regular metformin made me extremely sick, but I can tolerate the extended version. With the extended version, you can take your full dosage all at once. I take all my pills with dinner and if I do have any side effects, it is right away the next morning when I get up and then I am fine for the rest of the day.

I was on Glumetza. Its basically the same drug but it's more tolerable and easier on your stomach. My RE tends to prescribe that first since most people find it easier to handle then Metformin.

I know there are other meds out there, but my brain is not letting me think of them right now. If RE cannot prescribe something else can you see a regular endocrologist (sp), as they would have experience prescribing similar meds to a diabetic person...I had to see one in the past for a similar reason, but then ended up not needing the new med at the time.

I've been taking Met for many years but my stomch problems were so bad. My Endo switched me to Glumetza and told me to take all three at night. I still have occasional cramping but so much better. However it is much more money. I pay $90 for a monthly supply, and that's with insurance!
