Question Questions about Met? (m/c ment. & pg questions)

I noticed a lot of ladies on here are taking met are eithe IR or Non IR. My RE told me I'm IR and I started on 500mg of met and in 10 days I'll be on 1500mg of met. Anyhow, I've noticed some ladies say they've conceived just by taking met alone and some taking met w/ clomid and met prevents m/c. I'm guessing I've had PCOS for awhile and no one bother to dx me. My grandfather has diabetes and I m/c in mar of 03.
I just have a few questions.
How long will I be taking met?
Is this a lifetime med I will be on?
Is met safe to take during an entire pg?
How long is it taken for during a pg?
Does met induce AF or will I need to keep taking my prometrium?
What's the most commonly used injectable?
What what information does anyone know on that injectable?

Sorry for so many questions. Thanks in advance for any answers.

Some people do start ovulating on their own after being on met fora couple of months. I am NOT IR but have pcos and m/c twice... then started taking met... so I can answer a few questions. I took it the first successful pregnancy till I was 12 weeks pregnant. In that pregnancy, Iended up with gestational diabetes.... (diet controlled)... so my next successful pregnancy I took it till delivery. Since I am not insulin resistent... i do not take it any more. Both my daughters are healthy. I would feel comfortable if I were to conceive again taking it the entire pregnancy. Good luck to you. Wishing you quick success.

Well I'll do my best to answer your questions.

I will be taking met for the duration. Pre-pregnancy, during pregnancy and post pregnancy. I believe that Met will be a lifetime med for me. In addition to IF issues, met helps with other more life threatening issues. The root of PCOS (i believe) is insulin. I am extremely IR. I would eventually be diabetic, at higher risk for strokes, heart disease and a host of other nasty things. Its important not to miss that when focusing on having a baby. We all want babies here but being here for a babies/children once we have them is just as important and crucial

Many folks take Met through the first trimester of pregnancy, others (like myself) will take it the entire pregnancy and after. My dr feels that met will make a huge difference in the long run to my health.

I have been on Met for about three months. The first month was was with regular metformin and i couldnt handle it. The side effects were awful. I was switched to metformin ER and found that it was amazingly better on my tummy. Starting the second month i have two 29 day cycles. Before met i would go months without periods or weeks or months with periods. It was horrible. So far its been great at regulating my cycles. I am still not ovulating on it by itself but shaping up my cycles is extremely encouraging.

As far as injectables go i have no idea on that one. You might want to ask the ladies over on the injectable boards. I know Julie2 over there has pcos and some experience with them.

good luck!

I, too, have PCOS and severe IR. I'm also diabetic thanks to years of being un dx. I take 1000mg of metformin a day and it has been a godsend! I'm having periods like clockwork and ovulating completely on my own! It took about 8 months before I starting O'ing, but AF came almost immediately. I would go 2 years at a time with no AF ever! I still haven't gotten pregnant yet, but I'm not seeing any fertility specialists. Trying completely on my own. I can't afford expensive treatment. But on the upside, I've only being actively trying for about 6 months now.

As far as taking it during pregnancy...yes, I probably will. I'll be on it for the rest of my life unless my diabetes gets worse (god forbid) and I have to start insulin. Met does help AF start, it may take some women longer than it did me.

I hope this helps!

Thank you all for your replies. They were extremely helpful. I'm not on Met ER, but I didn't have any side effects when I started unless I take it w/o milk then my tummy is all upset. Thank you for answering about taking met during a pregnancy. I don't want to risk having another m/c so, I will bring that up at my next dr. appt and find out if I will be on met for life.

Thanks again.

what's the difference in met and met ER, I have the ER and have only been taking it for about 5 days and it hasn't bothered me at all, I've gotten a few more headaches than normal (but I think I'm paranoid about getting sick) beyond that it hasn't been too hard, maybe just the regular met is worse, I dunno

Metformin ER is an extended release version. It's supposed to be better on the stomach and have less side effects.
