Lightbulb Please give me some feed back!!!!!

Hi, I'm mj and i have been dx with PCOS. I have been trying for about a year and we were not getting pg. I went to a fertility DR was put me on Provera to shed the lining of my uterus and then he put my on metformin 1700mg a day and clomid 100mg a day. I'm 26 and in ok shape. My question is how soon will i get pg. And once i'm pg should i stay on the metformin through out the pg or should i stop the metformin. I'm so confused. So many people and Dr say diffrent things. Please help!!!!

MJ,

Hey it is Christi here. I am in a similar situation as you. I was DXed with PCOS recently. I was put on Provera, Metformin and Clomid as well. I did happen to ask my OB/GYN about continuing the Metformin if I were to become pregnant. He stated that he would take me off of the Metformin if I became pregnanat because there were not enough studies on the safety of keeping a woman on Metformin through pregnancy. I don't know if this is the way that all Drs. feel that is just my OB/GYN's opinion. I do feel good about my Drs. decision though becuase I would not want to be on a medication that he was not 100% sure would not hurt my baby. I hope this helps a bit. I really hope that everything goes well for you. Please keep us posted..

Christi

Hey there. I am on the other side of the fence...my RE said he'd keep me on the metformin after becoming pg. I was on it with two of my last three pregnancies (all ended in m/c). And diagnosed with PCOS in December, he said that there isn't alot of info on metformin during pg but his experiences have been good using it as opposed to not. So who knows? There is so much confusing info out there! Sometimes I feel like I am playing Russian Roulette with my fertility

del - it is great that your dr put you on metformin. It would be better if you take it for a few months by itself first before doing a clomid cycle. It can take some time for metformin to get your body working more normally (getting insulin levels down, filtering out the testosterone, etc), and if you start clomid too soon, clomid can crank up the testosterone level before the metformin has a chance to get it under control. In addition, it might turn out that you ovulate on metformin alone and don't even need the clomid. Also, 100mg isn't the usual starting dose of clomid - usually people start at 50mg. Clomid has a negative effect on the uterine lining and cervical fluid, and becomes a contraceptive after 3-6 cycles. I assume that if you're seeing an RE, you'll get proper ultrasound monitoring during your clomid cycle.

If you've taken clomid before, metformin will change how you respond to it. For example, I needed 100mg of clomid to ovulate, albeit late, like cd 18 or something, without metformin; but with metformin, I once ovulated on day 14 with only 50 mg clomid; these days I'm ovulating on metformin alone, and we're about to start ttc again. If you're looking for a success story, to make a long story short, I ovulated and conceived my very first cycle on metformin alone after multiple failed IVFs.

As far as taking it during pg, you have to weigh the risks and benefits for your particular case. Metformin is known to reduce the high m/c rate of pcos. In my first pg, I stopped metformin at 5 weeks; the pg was successful. In my second pg, a twin pg which was also successful, I took metformin through week 13. If we are lucky enough to conceive again, I hope to take it all the way to term. I have great confidence in it.

At 26, you are quite young. That is in your favor. Good luck and please keep us updated!!
