Are prometrium and provera the same?

Do the prometium supps act the same way as provera? They are both progesterone.

I have been taking prometrium now for 11 days (since IUI on 5/21), I havent gotten AF nor have I gotten a BFP yet. I normally need to take provera for 7 days to bring on AF.
I was just wondering if they basically did the same thing being they are both progesterone but whats confusing is I'm taking prometrium to prevent m/c and I take provera to start AF.
I guess my real thought is if they are the same then I would have gotten AF by now and since I didnt maybe I am preg!

Any thoughts? RE's office is gone for weekend.
    Thanks!

I have taken both prometrium and provera. My current re prefers prometrium becuase she says it more like teh natural progesterone your body produces vs synthetic. I always started 2 days after provera but the prometrium its always 7-10 days after finishing.

Hmm...my RE told me to continue taking the Prometrium until we get the results of blood preg test. So I guess if its - then I would stop Prometrium and AF would come the same as if I had been taking Provera?

So I guess it does basically the same thing then.

Yes, it does do essentially the same thing. Progesterone (actually, the lack of it) signals your body to start AF, so it is often given to women who do not have regular cycles to bring on AF. Here's how it normally works -- after you ovulate, your corpeus luteum (leftover shell of the ovulated egg) produces progesterone for about 7-10 days, then the production diminishes, and the drop in progesterone level brings on AF -- UNLESS you are pregnant, in which case the embryo takes over the progesterone production. Your body needs the progesterone to support a pregnancy, so if you do not produce enough progesterone on your own, you will lose the pregnancy. Therefore, drs will often prescribe progesterone from the time of O/IUI/Transplant until it is determined whether pregnancy is acheived. If no pregnancy, you can stop the progesterone and AF will come within a few days (it may take up to 10, I think, though it has alwyas been sooner for me), and if you are pregnant, your dr. will keep you on progesterone for several weeks, possibly up through the end of the 1st trimester.

For women who do not have regular cycles, taking progesterone supplements "fakes" the body into thinking you've ovulated (the supplement is like the natural progesterone produced following ovulation) and your body responds by shedding the uterine lining (AF) when the progesterone is gone.

11 DPO is still early for an HPT, so I would try again in about 3-4 days or just wait for your blood work!

Cassie THANK YOU!! That info was great! A friend and I were looking it up but couldnt get the answer you gave me. Thanks again!

I did POAS again this morning 12dpiui and got a faint line but about 5 hours later started bleeding. So I am going to try again tomorrow and Monday is my beta.
