Oh man - Shocked, proud and frustrated at the same time!

From the school newsletter today:

2008 Minneapolis Economic Congress Debate

Congratulations to the students who represented Washburn High School at the 2008 Minneapolis Economic Congress Debate, held at the University of Minnesota. Students from all seven Minneapolis High Schools debated the following economic issues that confront today's citizens:

1. Strategies to Finance College Education
2. National Economic Growth vs. Individual Income Equity
3. U.S. Role in Addressing Poverty in Developing Countries

The Washburn High School students were well prepared for their research and presentation on their topics - they were awarded first place for Topic 2 and Topic 3. The judges were Toby Madden, Regional Economic Analyst of the Federal Reserve Bank, Ed Lotterman, St. Paul Pioneer Press Columnist, and Elizabeth Davis, U. of M. Economics Professor.

Please congratulate the following students:
Whereby follows a list of names which includes Max!!!

I knew he had joined the debate team and I knew they were working on stuff for a meet, but I did not know exactly when it was NOR that it was such a big flippin' deal!!

I never know whether to be thrilled or pissed with this kind of news. Max will live his entire life without me ever getting so much as a snapshot of it. But it IS his life, not mine.

And Cole will tell me everything; I just know he will.

(Oh Colie PLEASE don't change!!!!)

Wow!! Congrats to Max! This is HUGE!!!!

I feel your pain. I have to drag everything out of K too. Not because she deliberately hids things from me, but she forgets. She lives in the moment, when something's done, it's forgotten. Then I find out bits and pieces from her friends' parents and we all compare notes because apparently they are all like this. I hope it's a phase with her!

aw NL...i would feel the same way. you want to be able and go watch your young man and be so proud of him. maybe you could plea to his emotions and tell him how broken hearted you were that you missed this very proud moment because he didn't share with you. what do ya think? is he "moveable" that way?

i'm really sorry you didn't get to see it. but you should be so proud of him just the same!

congrats max!! super job!

It would work with Cole but I think Max would just feel emotionally manipulated so, the "broken hearted" part probably wouldn't work. But I did tell him I saw it in the newsletter, thought it was awesome, asked him if it was fun (he said yes). I did say that I had had no idea about it and was really surprised and proud to read it. Which is true!

I seriously couldn't handle not knowing something like that and being involved in some small way....you're taking it better than I would NL.

Anyway...congrats to Max...that's an awesome achievement

ok, well, maybe broken hearted is a "little" over the top... but "disappointed" is always a good word

That's a great accomplishment - I know you're proud. But also disappointed. I hope he'll want to share more as he gets older.
