Middle school after school activities?

Our community advisory committee is looking for middle school activities to offer students after school for those students who can't/ don't want to participate in sports.

What activities did/does your MS offer after school. I was thinking things like photography, game club, yearbook, tv production, etc. Things like chess club have gotten such a negative connotation (geeks) over the years, we are looking for things that the kids will think are interesting.

Any one have any cool ideas? TIA!

lara's school has book club, yearbook, bridge, chess, newspaper, talent show, spring show, girls friendship club. we have to pay $30 the school system which pays for all after school activities and provides a bus to the developments. if you don't pay ther $30 your child cannot participate in any after school activities.

here is a link to all kinds of activities offered at lara's school with descriptions of each activity.

The biggest thing in our area is youth group. The schools have young life chapters that the kids jr. high and high school both, just run to each week. Other than that, it's just the yearbook and sports. I think photography and/or art would go over very well. Wish they had it here!

Oh, I like the idea of a newspaper club!

What does the youth group focus on?

Our youth groups are all church based. I think Young Life is as well.

Our local library offered an art club, and i thought that was pretty cool.
and chess is very big around here...so chess club would meet every wed.

There are so many sports things after school - both school and community - that there really aren't a lot of other activities. They do have a suprervised game room where kids are welcome to hang out together - pingpong, air hockey, foosball. I think the Destination Imagination groups meet after school.

The ones we are discussing now are the newspaper and an honor society. They already offer drama, student council, FFA, Oddessey of the Mind, and sports. We are a very rural area so we are lookig to promote constructive activities where students can interact. There are students who can't or don't want to participate in sports, and we'd like to have something to offer them too.
