x-post Preparation for Bar Mitzvah for my ADHD son

My soon to be 12 year old son has ADHD, anxiety and a Tourette's variant but we have things under good control with medications. He will become Bar Mitzvah a year from this May. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions on how to get him through his lessons as easily as possible??? Our synagogue is not great about initiating lessons with ANY of the kids so I will really need to be on the ball and advocate for him. He is in regular classes with support at school and has done fine in Hebrew school, but I worry about his ability to stay on task with this new challenge and about the ability or willingness of the staff to keep him engaged and not get frustrated with him.

TIA,

Bash

Thank you for the update. I do not have a suggestion. I'm sure someone on here will share some really good advice. Welcome back.

I think it is a wonderful event to look forward to.

Thanks, Mutton!

Someone on the behavior challenges board recommended "Front of the Class" which is about a man with Tourette's. He talks about preparing for his bar mitzvah in the book and emphasizes what a positive impact doing a good job with it had on his life (especially on his relationships with his extended family).

We have decided to hire a private tutor and to start several months earlier than is usually recommended. Now we just have to find the right tutor!!!!!

That's a great idea. Good luck with the tutor hunting. Interviews and definitely check on references.
