Ryan's parent conference was last week. Academically he's doing great -- he's moved from the remedial reading group in the fall to above grade level now. Socially he has friends and seems happy at his new school. He still has little meltdowns (much less often than last year) and we're working on the thumbsucking, but still... I'm proud of my little guy for making this transition to a new school and doing so well this year!

Oh my gosh, I really needed this today!!!! Thank you for making it ok to brag cause I have been dying to tell someone but have been keeping the last couple of wks to myself...

10 yr old ds was nominated by his teacher to be a 2009 Illinois Young Scholar!!!! The student has to be nominated by the teacher as the best and brightest in their class. He is only the 2nd student to be nominated (there was 1 girl last yr) at our school. Ds has always done well academically BUT we had a situation 2 yrs ago where ds was falsely accused of bullying (by the parents of a boy that had punched ds in the face 2 wks prior to her accusation) and the principal initially ran with it and then later (about 2-3 wks later) apologized to both ds and myself. The other parent continued to spread false rumors about ds and my dh & I. It was a living nightmare. The problem was that the principal never told the teacher of the final outcome, only told her that it had been resolved. And it just really seemed as if the teacher(s) the following yr (last yr) were under the impression that ds was a problem waiting to happen. Too many small incidents to go into, but the gist of it is that I felt as if ds had a bad rep that he truly didn't deserve (no thanks to our principal). I had spoken to the teacher that ds had had prior to the false accusations and she told me that I may not have been to far off in my feelings because although she hadn't heard anything, she does know that stuff like bad reps do happen and she felt REALLY bad cause she always thought highly of ds. Fast forward, new school(intermediate)=new teachers and N0W HE IS NOMINATED FOR 2009 ILLINOIS YOUNG SCHOLAR!!!!! I literally cried with relief for ds. The award is great BUT the fact that he is now being seen for who he actually is rather than what one family tried to portray him as is the greatest thing!!!!

AND................he came home a wk after we received notification of the scholar award with straight A's on his report card!!!! He received one B (otherwise all A's) in both the 1st & 2nd quarter and was able to finally get all A's for the 3rd quarter. He is usually a very humble kid (didn't vote for himself for basketball all-star team even though coach told the kids that they could vote for themselves---he said that if his teammates thought he was good enough that "they" would vote for him---he did get voted in, but I was really impressed by his way of thought) and he jumped off the bus screaming to me "Straight A's--I did it !!!!!".

Again, I can't begin to tell you how proud I am of him and have been biting my tongue because I don't want to be "one of those moms" that brags but since you gave me the go ahead....THANKS!!!!! Feels good to be able to brag!!
