My pedi can't see my 1-yr-old until tomorrow and she's showing signs of a UTI. Urgent care and ER aren't options as apparently we're having an outbreak of H1N1 in our area.
How do I make her more comfortable until we get to the dr.? I'm pushing fluids-water and Pedialyte and I've given her Motrin for the fever. It's obvious she's in pain when she tries "to go."
Also, is cathaterization (bad spelling) the only way to confirm UTI in children this age? Do most pedi's do the test or prescribe antibiotics based on symptoms?
Can you tell the nurse at my dr.'s office was of no help!? Ggrrr...

I'm sorry your dr can't see you today - I think that is awful! I thought they had to find a time to see you if you call with an emergency? My dr always does so I assumed all drs do.

What signs is she showing?
When Jess had an unexplained fever for more than 4 days we had to get her tested for a UTI and the dr said a catheter was the only way to do it. I think there are other ways such as using a bag but they aren't as reliable.
If she has a fever are you giving tylennol or motrin?
I hope you get her to be seen in the morning and she is feeling better.

Yikes, I am soooo sorry. I know when I had a UTI I took proidium (sp?) It is a pill that makes your urine orange but it also has numbing agents in it so it wont hurt when you go. Could you call a pharmacist and see if it is safe for a baby to take? If so, it is sold over the counter.
Again... so sorry she is going through this. I cant believe your dr wont see her. I would look for a new pedi if I were you. I 2nd waht Nicole said... mine make time if it is an emergency.

I'm so sorry you've had this wait
It's no fun to see our little ones in so much pain...and believe me, with as many UTI's as I've had, I KNOW they are NO FUN! Give her Tylenol & Motrin to help with pain. Not sure about the cath's. I would think they could do something if her diaper is wet enough but I'm not sure.
None of my kids have had this (thankfully...knock on wood!!!) so not sure how ped's handle it. For me, the first time I had to go in for a test but it eventually got to be so routine that they would just call an Rx in for me. I would think they would atleast want to see her.
Sorry your nurse was such a PITA!!! Why wouldn't your doc see you today?? I would definately let them know you are not happy about that, esp since it was during the day when they should have been able to squeeze you in, esp since you can't turn to the ER,etc because of the H1N1.
Hope you get right in in the AM!!!

I would think your ped's office should have accomodated you by having you bring her in to at least get a sample collected, see a nurse practitioner or another doc. They can't get a sample from a wet diaper, it is contaminated. I think there is some sort of sterile bag they can attach, then let her run around awhile and see if she goes....otherwise it will have to be with a catheter. With an older child or adult they would often just give an antibiotic, but I think in this young of a child they will likely want a sample. Keep up with the motrin/tylenol, and fluids....I wouldn't try the pyridium in a child so young.
