Circumcision - Did you circumcise your son? (preg mentioned) xpost

xpost from general parenting

Hi,

I am having twin boys!

Did you circumcise your son? If so, when was it done, what can be done for pain relief, how to take care of it when it is healing, and how long is the recovery?

If you did not circumsise your son, is it possible to explain why you did not?

I am trying to decide between circumcise the boys or not.

Thanks!

we circumcised the boys.

recover was about a week if I remember right. the nurses go over everything with you on how to take care of it, you just pull the skin back, put vasoline on it, and wrap it with gauze. it hurt them to pee the first day, and then after that they seemed to be ok with it. Their peepee will look very red and inflamed for a few days as well.

they took our boys to the nursery while still in the hosptial and did it, so we didn't witness it being done. I think that made it easier than having to watch as I've heard some moms have done.

We had twin boys and are expecting another in 3wks - yes, we circ'd our twins and will again with this baby.

Ours was done in the hospital - they were actually done a day apart from eachother because we had one in the NICU for 36hrs...so I'm thinking one was done at about 24hrs and maybe the other around 36-48hrs after delivery. They asked if we wanted to be present but dh and I both declined - we just couldn't watch that pain I'm not sure what they offer for pain relief but we never had to do anything extra. The hosp gave us instructions on how to keep it clean, etc and honestly, I will be learning it all over again because I don't remember that much other than we kept vaseline or something on it until it was healed. It honestly never bothered my boys at all so I don't think there is really any "recovery" time

Our OB did the procedure on day 2 and by the time we went home on day 4 it was fine (no more gauze or A&D needed). They gave them "sweet gas" to knock them out I think and I never noticed any problem with pain or peeing, but I was sorta messed up from the c-section. We chose to do it b'c DH is circ'd and felt it was important they all looked the same, plus I think it's more hygenic.

I was happy when I learned we were having 2 girls because DH and I disagree on this subject. He would have wanted to have it done but I didn't.

Congratulations on your boys - I can't wait to "meet" them!

Yes, we did our oldest DS and our youngest DS. I believe it was done on day 2 for both boys. It took about a week for our oldest. With his they said the vaseline and guaze. With our youngest it was just A&D for 3 days. It was fine after that. I always push the skin back during diaper changes. I have no idea what they gave the boys for pain when they did it. DH took the oldest into the room and watched the whole thing. The nurse picked up the youngest and brought him back when it was done. The only time either of them cried over it was the first time they peed after it was done. Never again after that.

I know some moms who opted to not have it done and now that their boys are older they are trying to get them to clean properly... or there could be an infection.

It is all personal/religious choice.

This is us too.
I was surprised to learn that the OB's do the circ instead of the ped's. We had two seperate docs do the circ's because they were done on different days...which led to them looking/being a little different...but still just fine

We circ'd our boy. I asked for it to be done after he was born, but he went to NICU right away. They had forgotten, but they did it on day 12 which is the day he came home.

They gave him tylenol for the pain, wrapped in A & D and bandage. We cared for it for about 4 days. easy to care for and it hurts them a lil when changing it.

I had a friend who opted for the ring. Which they put a ring around it and in a week it falls off. No pain.

We had both boys done. My ob actually did it in the hosp on sat am (they were born on thurs am). N had no probs, but J's took a little longer to heal. They were given tylenol in the nursery and brought back to me right after. (sound asleep i might add) Seemed like no biggie at all

We did not have our boys done. I don't think it is medically necessary. The gov't health care here also considers it elective surgery now and it is no longer paid for.

There are a few other reasons, but that's the simple answer.
