Manic...

Mr C's best friend from kinder is an "unique" kiddo. Not ASD...but, probable ADHD. He repeated kinder due to being socially immature. He is a great kid who was SO cool to Mr C. Since they are not in the same 1st grade class this year, they have lost touch....but, still play at recess from time to time to discuss Pokemon (both are obsessed).

Anyway...this little guy has gone thru some manic states. He is a bolter and has no sense of danger. Mom took him to the Dev Ped who started with a stimulant. Didn't help. Then, went to Zoloft and Tenex. Seemed to make things better for a while. Note - he never has behavior issues (severe ones) at school...just at home or in the community.

Last week he had such a huge meltdown at OT that it took 3 OTs to hold him down and his mother. He was hitting, scratching, punching and biting. They won't allow him back. Took them and his mom over an hour to calm him down. He lost his DS for 4 days as a result of this meltdown.

The next day, his nanny called his mom. The boy was running manic thru the house trying to find the DS. The mom told the nanny to put him in his room and hold the door so that he didn't destroy anything else in the house. She did..when mom got home, she walked into pee filled walls, poop all over the place, a dresser pulled off the wall (it was bolted), broken glass, books, toys, etc everywhere. She immediately called me as her DH was out of town. I drove over there to help. By the time I got there, the boy calmed down and had no idea the magnitude of what he had just done. Had no concern he could have hurt himself (mind you, he is a little guy)...

Mom took him back to Dev Ped yest and they started him on Risperdal.

I hope for this whole family, this med works!!!

Lori

That sounds like our DS in his earlier years. So stressful. Luckily we were able to get beyond most of that by 5. The poop on the walls was the worst. It is actually a pretty normal behavior for kids on the spectrum. If you Google it you will find a lot of stuff. We ran into it during the potty training years. I say years as for our guy until he could do it all he wanted no part of it. He painted with butter too. Anyway pass along my sympathy as I know it is tough. Tell her 409 and Mr Clean white pads work miracles.

Sue

PS I am so glad we are through that.

Sounds a LOT like BPD to me...stimulants will make them worse. I am reading the Bipolar Child, and some of the things that you wrote sound a lot like a child in the book. A ton of children who are BP are often first diagnosed as just ADHD. I hope that the Risperidal helps. It is the only thing beside Depakote that has helped C with his rages. Hugs to your friend Lori!

Each day as I watch you struggle I am reminded to find joy in the little things, to stop and smell the flowers, and that some things are more important than material things. Your smile melts my heart, and takes the chronic pain away, if only for a fleeting moment. Thank you for the joy that you bring, my son.

That is actually what the Dev Ped is thinking now....the Risperdal is helping so far!!!! He had one meltdown that lasted literally 5 minutes! His mom was thrilled in comparison to what has been happening!!!!!

Hey, when Chance started taking it was like night and day. He is on a much larger dose now, but I am telling you that without it...LOOK OUT. His mood swings were incredible. Now with the Depakote it is at least 10 time better. Don't get me wrong, we both know that the medication on ly helps with the symptoms, and it is still "bad" especially if you were to compare it to a NT child, but he is much more manageable without so much raging. I am glad to hear that he is doing better.

If he is bipolar the stimulant may have precipitated the mania. that is what happened to my son. he was first diagnosed ADHD and took Ritalin. after 10 days he was extremelly manic. our doctor believes ritalin triggered the mania, that was how we supected he was bipolar (he was 7yo then). he was a different kid when we started Risperdal.

wish them luck
